I have a Costco safe. There is room to put 4 pistols....A shotgun, CZ 858 and an AR. 
No problem. You can add your own shelf.
Great for stacking Lots of Ammo on top of it as well. Saves floor space. You can't stack a couple hundred pounds of ammo on a shelf from Sears...LOL
Take the door off and get a Fridge Dolly, you can get it downstairs by yourself.

You keep your ammo outside the safe?
Why wouldn't he? - the only ammo I have in my safe is stored in those little metal boxes that come with guns. I just don't have room, for the volume of ammo I go through, to keep my ammo in a safe.
I built a second cabinet out of MDF and it fits right snug in the closet by the front entrance. All my ammo is in it, it locks right up to keep the children out and its out of sight where the guns can't tempt small hands into the devil's folly.
On the way out to the range, I grab and go in seconds. Coming back is just as quick and the guns only go downstairs once a month for cleaning and that's it. Keep it simple, keep it handy.

Around Christmas I saw something at Canadian Tire that would do just fine. It was a tall utility cabinet they had on sale. Sheet metal outsides, two doors, keylock and handle on one door, and steel locking bars (well, more like 1/4" rod) from the handle to the doorframe.
Remember, the regulations say locked, not visible and not easily broken into. After that how far you go is a matter of personal comfort. A bank vault serves the same purpose as a dollar store padlock and hasp on an old gym locker.

I vote for the Costco safe too! Even if installing it did make me realize how uneven my basement floor is...
But it's a grat value and quite secure. Now I have room for all those other firearms I want but can't afford...(at the moment?)

I also use the 14-gun stack on. With the price of ammo the way it is....I decided I needed a dedicated ammo locker.
I made it a 'built-in'. I also bolted to the floor and the back wall.
When you think of Ruag or Hornady TAP.308 costing upwards of $2 a round and a small box of Lapua/ Berger bullets at $40-$50.
Even scopes and sights I store there when not in use.
Someone might break in and Not get your guns....but they could walk away with thousands of dollars in ammo, scopes, etc.
I have the Honeywell 2743D safe from Costco. My local Costco has them for $339 as of a week ago and they had lots, so you should be able to find them easily. It has two shelves and room for long guns underneath. Currently I have 10 long guns and 4 pistols in it with room for another pistol no problem. Depending on your shotgun, it may not fit in any safe unless it is a very large one. I have a 12ga pump with a 30" barrel and it is way too long to fit unless I pull all the shelves from my safe.
My safe sits in my bedroom closet and it was put there by myself and a friend. We removed the door and it was very manageable. To go down stairs I wouldn't even bother removing the door.

I had my heart set on that exact cabinet, and would have bought it if I didn't think $500 was overpriced. I also read a few reviews about it coming with crinkled corners which made me question its strength (planned on putting a lot of ammo weight on the shelves). I ended up finding a used electrical cabinet, gutting it, patching the holes, and building metal shelving inside of it - ending up almost exactly like the one pictured, but with only one large door, 2 more shelves, and the whole cabinet is slightly larger and heavier duty (14 ga. sheet metal throughout, guessing 300lbs). I put a lot of work into my cabinet, and it is exactly what I want. I figured if I am willing to take on gun projects, why not a gun cabinet project.
I just wanted organization, not burglar protection. For those wanting the later, keep in mind that a lot of the 'safes' out there are very pricey and come with an ultra strong, heavy front, possibly an elaborate locking system - but if you reach around and tap the sides you find many are just thin sheet metal everywhere else.
All I can say is think everything through at least 3 times - mine chased me down the stairs and nearly killed me.

In Canada it is legal to use a pistol for lethal force if justified. The problem is our gun lock laws contradict this. Most people keep there guns in a safe in a room other then there bedroom. If something goes bump in the night, most will not have enough time to go to there safe unlock and grab a pistol. The other alternative is having your pistol in its original case locked and under your bed. Again the problem is time, If a knife or gun wielding maniac crashes your house most likely you will not have enough time to open the case, find the key and unlock and load your pistol. Unfortunatly while you're fumbling with the key, the intruder is breathing down your neck. aka you're f**ked!
The answer is, Buy a small pistol safe and put it right beside your bed. (I got one from costco for a couple hundred) Trust me this is your ultimate insurance policy. Store your loaded mags in a simple wooden box on top of the safe. Every night before you go to bed enter the code and leave the safe door ajar, and every morning lock the safe. Keep in mind, leaving the door open is not, legally correct. The key is make sure you buy an electronic combo safe, it's easy to justify to the courts that you were able to punch in the four digit code, rather then fumbling with a traditional combo lock. If there is a bump in the night you will be ready to protect yourself and your family, whats more, is this solution is perfectly legal, and worst case scenario easy to justify to the courts if need be...
