Hey so there seems to be TONS of nice 38 s&w revolvers lying around and selling for really cheap prices. I was wondering if you could make brass for it by cutting down 38 special brass OR i remeber reading accounts of soldiers in WW2 pinching the rim on 9mm brass to make it fit in a 38 S&W revolver. Obviously i wouldnt use factory loaded 9mm but could i pinch the rim to make it fit and make a light load?

thanks

.38 Spec. is smaller in diameter. Cases made this way will work, but will expand significantly in front of the web.
Just use the correct brass.

Buy a box of .38 S&W factory. They will last a while. The case dimensions are different, as already pointed out.
As for using 9mm, don't forget that all 9mm is loaded to much higher pressure than .38 S&W. The guns are old and not necessarily capable of managing the higher pressures. What was a wartime expedient is not necessarily good for peacetime toys.

yeah i wasnt planning on using commercial factory 9mm but making my own home loads and just pinching the rims.

"...commercial factory 9mm..." Won't fit the cylinders. The 9mm case is 4.5 thou bigger in diameter and it uses a smaller bullet diameter. Won't headspace either. Pinching the rim won't change that.
"....38 Spec. is smaller in diameter..." Yep, by 7.5 thou.
Proper .38 S&W ammo isn't hard to get.

9mm will slide right into the chambers on my 38 S&W.

The casemouth headspaces in the end of the chamber as well. I haven't done it but they would fire, for sure.

I cut down a hundred .38spl cases for my .38S&W H&R Defender. Depending on the brass thickness sometimes the .358 RN lead would bulge the case and prevent them from chambering. Then I found out that you can still buy .38S&W Winchester and Remington. Case solved. Even got some old Dominion cases from a friend.
