Anyone here uses shotguns with NO sight?

I am looking to cut down a Mossberg 28" plain barrel down to 19" ( using a pipe cutter ) and wanted opinions about using it with no bead.

Basically it would be a truck gun / bear gun.

OKH

Kinda sucks. I'm having a bead put on an old Ithaca 37 that was cut down as we speak. Worked fine for clays but it's amazing how often you can miss a milk jug at 25 yards with no bead. Using slugs that is.

It is doable but not ideal. I'd look into the barrel band style sights. Clamp to barrel and go. The other option is to purchase another barrel. It might be cheaper than hacking and adding a sight. Even if its not, its a lot easier.

Tru-Glo makes a snap on sight - it is held straight by a little notch that the bead goes into... Just add some epoxy to stop it from rotating and away you go.

A 19 inch 12 gauge shotgun barrel is just this side of useless for any kind of classic wingshooting or clays. You will have a point and blast shotgun...who needs a front bead then?

I am currently getting my Mossberg 28" 20Ga barrel cut down to 18" and adding a new site for like $70, was cheaper than buying a new barrel as they do not make any short 20Ga barrels. Gobles is doing the work.

When I was a lot younger (maybe 12) my grandfather had an old Winchester that had no bead or any sight what so ever. We'd set up targets color coded and about 20 yards away and have little competitions where you would walk parallel to the targets and someone would yell RED!! Or Green and you would spin and hit the target without really aiming down the barrel.. instinctive shooting I guess you could call it. Anyways at first you suck lol but after awhile you can get good... really good; almost like a sixth sense and you could hit just about anything without aiming. Cowboy style !! lol

Anyways enough of a walk down memory lane. I guess I'm just trying to say it's possible and a lot of fun - best years of my life :)

i have an old cooey 410 that has no bead or sights, i shoot grouse just fine with it, but i would like a bead at the least.

My cut off barrel has a garden hose clamp at the end. The sight takes up the entire target at any range, but it's hard to miss and cost me about 50 cents!!

Beadless

Here's what I did. I ordered a drill & tap kit from Brownell's made for this procedure. You can even chose the thread type you want. They also had a nice selection of beads from silver to fiber optic. You can use your old bead if you know the thread size. But why not get a nice new one ? Its really pretty straight forward. The hardest part is determining top dead center on the barrel. You will have to figger that out for yourself.... Ok you put the barrel back in the receiver, place two straight edges along the side of the receiver with another small steel ruler or similar clamped across the ends where you want the bead. Mark that spot on the barrel. Use a small punch to dimple the spot and keep the drill bit from sliding around. Drill, tap, and screw the bead in. You will have to figure out the fine details which I have left out but you should get the idea. A drill press would help. I have used other methods but I am not sure of your mechanical abilities or tools. Try it. Don't be afraid.

A couple of suggestions. Tru-Glo makes shotgun sights. Western Gun Parts in Edmonton normally carries them. Their's even comes with a ghost ring rear sight. I was advised that many are attached with Locktite 380 (Black Max) and have had good luck with this. I purchased an 18" Mossberg barrel from Milarm a year or so ago. I can't remember the exact details, but I think it was only about $90. Either way you can get it set up with sights for under $100.

I appreciate all the replies... some good ideas... being a cheap ( broke ) guy I might go for the garden hose clamp idea!!

I am thinking to cut the barrel using a pipe cutter, to 20 inches, and try using with no bead.

I will first mark on the barrel using a punch, and using the uncut barrel and bead and thread down the top of the barrel, to indictate where the new bead should be set.

Then I will cut the barrel to 20 inches, and take it out to give it try.

I figure I can then decide late if I want to have a bead re-installed.

Worst case senario... I don't like my handiwork and take it to a gunsmith to bet cut and beaded later.

Using a shotgun without a bead can be done, but it is time consuming to look over the receiver, raise the muzzle until you see it, then drop it just out of sight. Check out Gatehouse's thread on making a sight for his bear gun.

I use my Outlaw without ever using the sight and i can hit a soup can at 25yds everytime with #2's. I just tried out some new buck last night 3" 00 at 1450fps 15 pellets at a torso size target 8" x 20" at 25 yds and 13 pellets scored. It all depends on how good you are at point shooting with practice you can get very good.
