Father-In-Law Called He Wants a Bear Defense Gun ???

I have a very accurate 20" barreled Puma M92 in 454 Casull it is fast handling and powerful I call it my 45-70 light it holds 9 454 Casull and 10 45 Colts in the mag tube I removed the piece of scrap rear sight and installed my Marlin 1895GS rear sight instead of drilling then mounting a ghost ring sight.

I have had a couple of issues with it over the years first the stock came cracked which really wasn't an issue because I was changing them over to black/gray laminate stocks anyway, then a couple years after having it the extremely weak extractor broke and it took forever to get the parts then to get it fixed.

I find I leave it at home far more than my Marlin 1895GS but I do get 1860fps with 360gr WLNGC's from it and if I remember right 240gr XTP-Mag's do 2250 - 2350fps can't remember I'll have to look it up.

I do not take it with me when I am in grizzly country I take the Marlin or my 375RUM now.
 
Another vote for a SxS 12ga, they are virtually idiot proof, require minimal maintenance, and if a bear DOES charge you you are unlikely to be able to get off more than one or 2 shots anyway, so more than appropriate for the task at hand.
 
Maybe you should hit the range with him and take along a few of your bear stoppers....
I'd go with a Trapper length lever action for ease of carry.

Exactly.

Use to own 12g double barreled 3 inch mag. The gun was very light (weighed approx. 6lbs), use to load it with the baddest 3 inch mag loads I could buy (never new better at the time, bigger is badder right) once in while both barrels would go off with one trigger pull (man would that thing smart).

Sold it before I developed a flinch.
 
Hi folks, sorry to intrude, but just wanted to mention that you should always remember that when hunting, and eventual shooting of a large brown bear with almost any handgun, it is customary to file the front sight, right down flush with the top of the barrel before taking out to the hunt.

He is in Central Alberta and I'm in South Western BC so it will fortunately be a while before I see him again:D so I'm not able to take him to or even just give him my guns to try.

He's extremely capable & strong for being 63 years old so I do not think for a second that he will not catch on quickly with whatever firearm he ends up choosing it's just that I have seen many really big guys that can't handle recoil.

I load my 4.25" Ruger Super Redhawk with 6 405gr WLNGC's @ 1330fps which is equal to the original 45-70 loads that killed millions of buffalo and thousands of grizzlies in North America...

Maybe, if you put a paisley stock on it, with a nice lace ribbon for a barrel band and have the whole thing stored in a mauve velvet case.....:D

I keep hearing rumours there are Liberace and Rock Hudson Commemorative Special Editions in the works with all those options factory installed...!

This was actually the first gun that came to my mind. I bought one for my dad who the same application. There is very little to think about - load, aim, safety off, fire. It is a simple and intuitive process that is damn near unforgetable or do out of order. Yes are you limited to only two rounds but from the reading I have done, most interactions will only last 1-2rds anyways. And if something goes wrong and more ammo is needed, reloads are not overly time consuming. Put some good tritium iron sights on and load up with your preference of slugs.
