Father-In-Law Called He Wants a Bear Defense Gun ???

Winchester 94 Trapper 30-30 170gr.load. light short rifle enough energy at 75yd and under 5or6 rounds of fire power can be shot from the shoulder or the hip .

Guide Gun in .450 Marlin.

But for a gun you have to carry, no one ever mentions the Ruger Compact or Frontier line. The compact now weighs in at 5.5 pounds in .308. Which is the miggest you can get it now new, but if you look around you could get it in .338 Federal, 300RUM (or was it 300WSM?) and I even thought you could get it for 1 or 2 years in .405 Winchester (It was good enough to stock the Smithsonian....).

The frontier would allow you to mount a scout scope. perfect for what you want the father in law to have. Makes aiming fast AND easy on old eyes. Also eliminates the possibility of ouchy-eye on nervous shooters. Heck, mount a Burris FastFire up front.

My buddy dropped a 950 pound bull elk last year with a frontier in .308. And no bears are as tough as Bull Elk in the rut. I've skinned em all....

The 450 Marlin is sure getting a lot of attention lately. What's the big difference between the 450 Marlin and the 45-70 handloaded? Just the belt on the 450 Marlin? I seem to recall the ballistics were very similar

They created the 450 marlin and did the small changes basically so you couldn't load it by mistake in a .45/70. Because the .45/70 is "old", none of the commercial companies wanted to make hoter loads with the newest powders, because if you put those loads in old guns, like trapdoors, they grenade on you.... .450 Marlin is just the "new" .45/70 so you can load em up. That's not saying you can't load the .45/70 up... just go look at Garretts +P Hammerhead loads.... <drool!!!>.

I don't think we have enough information here.

This father-in-law...is he a good guy? Nasty old bugger? Wealthy? Flat broke? Any kids besides your wife? Does he have a 40' boat? Mansion on 40 acres on Saltspring?

I think you can see where I'm going here..... you might be better off rigging him up with a Cooey 39 with a broken firing pin..... ........:D

Hey thats a good idea, those remington pump guns are pretty good for an easy carrying, quick rifle. And 220RN or 200 TSX's will do whatever the man needs to do.

I think you want to keep an eye on recoil levels.
I would thing a 45/70 would be too much for a new shooter.

He is probably better off with a Trapper in 30/30 or even 45 colt.
A BLR with a modestly loaded 358 Winchester might also be a decent choice.

I like the semi-auto shotgun Boomer suggested.

a marlin 336c in 35 remington would do the job rather nicely. u can hold 6 in the mag and the recoil isn't a problem for one of my shrimpy friends (he's 5'4" and 120 pounds give or take) so it couldn't be a problem for a man as big as your father in law. you can pack a good punch with the 200 grain bullets too. good luck finding the right one for him

Why move the swivel?

From much reading, it seems the LE has a stronger slide arm than the regular production, and Remington recommends NOT putting the swivel on the civvie model slide arm, or the arm will bend.

I don't know why they don't just put he reinforced arm on everything, charge an extra $25 and ship it with swivels attached. IMO that's the reason the gun isn't more popular. I hate clamping swivels to barrels.

If I was going to buy a bear defence gun, It would be a synthetic Mossberg 500 persuader with an 18.5" or 20" barrel and full length mag tube (5-7 round capacity). I would load up with 3" Magnum 00 or 000 buckshot.

When I was first involved in gold panning and prospecting I carried a Win 1200 12 gauge shotgun with a # 4 in the chamber(blinding shot), a 00 buck, slug, 00buck, slug.
Now with all the choices out there I would use a .45/70 with 405 grain pills, doing 1166 fps(my favorite load) up to 2000 fps. There is few things in North america that, that recipe won't stop. Couple this with a nickle plated or stainless steel Marlin lever and your good to go!
One little trip my betterhalf and I took down in Bella Coola we seen a Sow grizzly and 3 cubs. The cubs were the same size as she was!! I will never go gold panning again when salmon are running! A SxS in this incounter would have a negative outcome.

This is the picture I sent my father-in-law too show how easy carrying a Marlin 1895GS is its gone so many miles just like that it is now just an extension of my arm...

This is my son he is about 2 1/2 years old in this picture...

Yes he is into going out into the great outdoors with his dad... :D

Even though I have a new puppy now I so miss my dog Moki she went absolutely everywhere with me for almost 12 years, I unfortunately had to put her down Oct 15/09 and these pictures are from around July 09 I'm thinking this was the very last real trip I did with her and yes I now have tears in my eyes...
