Five cartridges from gophers to grizzlies.

Five cartridges?!?!
Suppose I'm in a smaller gopher field on a calm day, 22lr will do, if it's a bit bigger of a field, 222rem would be better. Suppose the wind picks up, I'd get less wind drift using heavier bullets in a fast twist 223. What if I really want to see them explode, better up the speed a bit to 22-250 or 204 ruger. If I've also got a tag in my pocket, a 243win would be good insurance in case anything happened by. That's six and we've only covered (barely) gophers. How about we debate the reasons you only ever need to have ### in the missionary position? Why limit yourself? I've got the Speer reloading manual 14, I'll consider my collection complete, when I've got one of everything listed. Even that's conservative, I could try and get one each from the lyman manual. Add in Wildcats, forget about it. Five will never do.

Nope can't only do 5...

If the real-world came into it, I'd get away with a .22, .223, .308 and the 12 gauge I already have for bears when working (though I think a rifle would be more appropriate now). Never was much of a big game hunter. :)

Real world, PFFFT! This is Teh Interweb, we all know unless you select exactly the right gun and exactly the right bullet for every single situation, you WILL be eaten alive by creatures as small as Gophers!

Hmmm, for the areas that I hunt in Canada (where Grizzly is my biggest DG animal):

22LR - gophers, general plinker
223 - general varmint hunting and longer range plinking
308 - general mid-range rifle for small and medium big game up to and including deer, elk, moose, black bear
375 Ruger - when I know I am hunting for the medium to larger game animals like moose or elk, though this is a stretch (I just put this here as justification for owning one). This would also be my go to stopping-power rifle.

Now I say all this and my favorite hunting rifle right now is a 300 Win Mag which bridges the gap between the 308 and the 375. I like the extra reach that the 300WM provides over the 308, done with reasonably costed ammo and moderate recoil. So I guess 300 Win Mag would be my fifth. If I could only choose three calibres right now for Canada, I would go 22LR, 223, and 300WM

Now, I also bought the 375 Ruger for Africa so if this becomes a world-wide pick 5:
22LR - general plinking
223 - general varmint use
300 Win Mag - small to medium big game
375 Ruger - big game hunting
458 Lott - dangerous game rifle
With considerations made to cost and availability of ammunition, rifles chambered for these calibres (big reason for 223 over 22-250 is semi-auto availability), and recoil.

well what i have settled on finally is this

22LR-small game & pests
223 Rem- gophers, coyotes and the like
6.5x55 deer/antelope
6.5x54- bush carbine for deer
.358 Norma Mag-every living thing in existence.

Well, the .22 LR would certainly be more practical....but!
I'll take my .17 HMR because its funner.
.22-250 varmint.
7mm.08 deer gun, but also fine for antelope, moose or elk....
.45-70 all round bush gun/persuader
.338 Lapua for killing something in another time zone, should it be required.

And i get to keep my Rem 870 shotty!

Hmmm... I don't care much for hypothetical situations :D but I would pick:

22 LR - cheap plinking, target shooting, in close varminting, small game, birds
243 Win - long range varminting, pest control, small and medium game
300 WM - target shooting, large and dangerous game
416 Rigby - safari
12 ga - target shooting, birds, pest control, in close medium/large/dangerous game (add a rifled barrel to make 12 ga a rifle round! :dancingbanana: :D)

I settled for

22lr (target and small game/varmints)

308 for EVERYTHING else

20G smoothbore. By the way, if not for target shooting 20g could be everything I need.

and then... just for plinking...
