Okay you Norc/Poly 2009 owners with that nice black plastic stock:

Any of you dudes try glass bedding this black stock yet?
Have you used Devcon, Marine Tex, JB Weld, Acraglass ?

What are your experiences?
Will the bedding resin adhere to the black plastic?

And just for the record, those black plastic stocks are pretty good value for the money! I love them, but I still prefer my USGI glass stock which is already modified for a USGI M1 Garand buttplate (1/4" shorter for us short guys) ;)

Thoughts ? Insights ? Experiences?

Barney

i might try mine the gas block will be welded soon and the barrel is getting cut back and a AR10 brake is going on

About 25 years ago, I used Acraglas to glue the metal liner of a Mini 14 into a cheap injection moulded plastic stock. The liner is still held tightly in place.

I would luv to glass bed mine, but have no clue were to start or what to use. One quick ? for Hungry has there been any news about a clinc at Essa?

Kevin Keon in Edmonton did mine up just because he was curious about the same thing. I'm not sure what product he used, and I haven't put it through any really hard use, but it's still on there.

I'm trying something new so it may not work out so great. I am taking progress pics so I'll upload those later. Won't be done tonight sorry. Maybe I can post what I have done so far.

EDIT: Hmmm. This is not great. I am going to have to take the dremil to this and try again.

1st attempt to do a bed job on a M305. Learning experience. At least it isn't glued together.

Yea, I followed the same technique. Works good. I used a different epoxy than I normally use and it wouldn't bond to the poly stock. I found some LePage Steel Epoxy at Canadian Tire and it is working really well. 7 bucks a tube and 1 should be enough for 2 rifles. I really think he is going overboard with the amount of play-doh. Really you only need to fill the spots were there is going to be expoxy. Use a release agent like shoe polish on the other areas.

Varsol is a really good for cleaning up messy spots too.

So really if a guy had nothing and wnated to bed an action he needs.

Lepage Steel Epoxy $7
Masking tape $2
Varsol $5
rags $free
plasticene $6
Dremil and grinding/sanding bits $30-50 tops
(I have been using a $10 jobmate dremil for years and it works great)

So do-it-yourself is about $70 or so if you don't already own a dremil. You might not even need one if you have some small files, sandpaper and time to waste.

My only concern with devcon is that when the rifle gets HOT HOT HOT it will not expand as fast as the plasic stock. I still believe fibreglass is a better product. The bonding properties state that it will bond (TO SOME PLASTICS).

Devcon Plastic Steel® Putty (A)
Plastic Steel® is the original metal-filled epoxy putty used for hundreds of routine maintenance, production, and tooling applications. Patch and repair areas where welding or brazing would be undesirable or impossible.

Listed under NSN Stock #8030-00-903-6545; #8030-00-962-4430

Pretty much any bonding between a bedding agent and the plastic stock, even cured fiberglass stocks, is mechanical bonding. The more you rough it up, drill tiny holes, give it some anchor, the better.

I have used fiberglass pretty much exclusively in the past and I agree it is the best.

It is also the worst to work with. :(

Last time I did I swore it would be the last.

I HAVE DONE IT.

Yes, I successfully bedded my '09 Poly with the synthetic stock using JB Weld.

I took mental notes at Hungry s Halifax clinic, where he bedded a fibreglass stock. Combined that with some reading online and attacked my Poly stock.

Mind you I only fired 15 rounds through it, than I sold the stock and bought a Walnut stock. :)

It works.
