So I’m looking at these rifles for maybe varmint hunting and they have them listed as restricted. I’ve never been big on restricted firearms but these rifle interest me. What does it take to have a restricted license ? I do have my PAL for long guns..... Can you use these rifles in the field or are they for gun clubs only. Would any one have just a little info on what’s required without directing me to pages of reading. :D Thanks for any info...

Gun clubs only as far as I know. FS

You need an RPAL. The same restrictions are placed on these rifles as on handguns. They are also limited to 5 rounds in the magazine.

Summary:

1. License: you need to pass the relevant test and apply for a Restricted PAL to be allowed to acquire a restricted gun, e.g. the Remington R-15.

2. Range use only - you are only allowed to fire restricted firearms on a range that is approved for restricted firearms. In practice, most such ranges belong to clubs, so you have to join or be a guest at one of these clubs.

3. Transport - you need a permit called Authority To Transport (ATT), specifying the restricted firearm(s) and which ranges you can take them to.

4. Magazine capacity: as a semi-auto centrefire long gun with a detachable magazine, the magazine for it must not be capable of containing more than five rounds. But as 7.62mm mentioned in post #7, if a magazine that is not for this firearm happens to fit and function with it, it can be used with it even if it has a capacity greater than five rounds, so long as it doesn't run afoul of the regulation by being made for another gun subject to the same limits. E.g. the ones he named are made for a handgun, so they are allowed to be ten rounds, but magazines made for another semi-auto centerfire long gun would also be limited to five rounds.

Hunting paper targets is fun, but they taste like $h!t.

The restrictions in "Restricted" include: limiting magazine size and requiring authorization to even transport it to a gun club or range, among other things.... You will not be able to hunt with it (unless you can get laws changed for us).

You could go for a Robinson Arms XCR.....quite a bit more money, but non-restricted,and "similar" in function to an AR.

It was invented after they made the initial list of scary-looking long guns to be restricted, and they haven't gotten around to adding this one to the list.

Does the CFO have the legal power to issue a Permit for Hunting with these rifles?

No. It's not a policy but a regulation that is the issue, and a CFO's authority doesn't include discretion to excuse anyone from compliance with the regulation.

Actually, it isn't a regulation against hunting, but a regulation that you can only fire them on an approved range, and only possess them in transit according to your ATT or in storage. So in practice, you can't hunt with a restricted firearm, though hypothetically, if you could get game to enter the target area of an approved range and the range's own rules didn't prohibit it, you could "hunt" those animals with your restricted firearm.

Mind you, Hunting Regulations are a provincial matter, and some provinces may include in their's that you aren't allowed to use anything restricted for hunting. Not all bother, since you can't anyway.

Work on your CPC MP's send letters to them showing that the R-15/25 are only hunting rifles that are marketed as hunting rifles.

Actually, you can't "Hunt" on a range either. A little known law exists out there that declares all ranges as "Game Preserves" so no hunting on the range.
