There is a New Shooters Orientation Course scheduled for East Elgin March 6th if you are interested in shooting IDPA. Aside from gun handling fundamentals the course covers IDPA rules and how to play the game. In addition Steve David, the Area Contact for your area hosts Safety Officer Courses from time to time and a PM to him will get you the information as to when he might be scheduling his next courses.

Safety Officer Courses are regularly posted on the IDPA Canada website.

I've already got my CDP and IPSC Black Badge, is it necessary to take the IDPA as well?

Not for holster approval, but if you want to be an IDPA Safety Officer, you would have to take the IDPA Safety Officer Course to be allowed to SO IDPA matches.
