Question about 1st Handgun?

Heh guys, I am kind of unsure about a couple of things with getting my first handgun that hopefully you guys can answer for me.
I have had my Restricted PAL for several years, but I have never owned a Handgun. I am getting ready to buy a Pistol from a fellow CGN member from the other side of the Country.

Once I send him the Money, does he just "call in" to change the registration over to me, and get me a Temporary ATT for my home address?

Or is there something else that I have to call in and do myself?

How long will it likely take?

I have taken my Handgun safety course, but I dont belong to a club yet. I was waiting to get my first handgun before I joined and sent away my forms with my club membership to get my full time ATT.

Hopefully it is'nt to complicated, and a long process.
 
Well, the LTATT is handled by your club. Since I am not in Ontario, I am not familiar with that part of it. For the rest:

1) Buyer sends seller the $$$
2) Seller calls CFC and begins a transfer into the buyer's name
3) Buyer calls CFC and completes transfer
4) CFC now sends the transfer to the buyer's CFO for approval (no idea how long this takes in Ontario. In Alberta & BC, it is 24 hours or less typically)
5)CFO approves the transfer and CFC then issues the transfer notification to both buyer and seller. At this point, the seller can ship the pistol.
6) Pistol arrives at buyer's end. If the mail is delivered to your door, then you take the box inside and giggle like a child while opening your new toy. If the mail goes to your local postal outlet, you are SUPPOSED to call in to your CFO get an STATT to pick it up. Many people skip this step on the opinion that the pistol is simply a package until opened and simply go pick up their parcel, then open it at home. Your choice on that one.
7) You join a club and they deal with the LTATT stuff.

CFO will ask you what club you are a member of. If you are not a member then they ask you to tell them what club you intend to join. I got my first restricted without being a member of a club, but had to tell the CFO where I intended to join. Just have the name of a club you are thinking of joining. You can always switch it.

Well put. That should be a sticky somewhere here. This same question gets asked a lot.
 
So, does anyone know how long I am probably looking at from once the seller recieves the money to when he can send the gun to me. He is in BC, I am in Ontario?
 
Minimum 24hrs I was told up to 3 weeks for the transfer. I have had 1 take 24hrs and the next take a full week. You really never know with the Ontario CFO. It usually will take longer for your first transfer, and they will ask you all the questions about what you want the gun for and where you will be shooting it, and storing it.

Also is gonna depend on the seller. Some want to receive the notice of transfer in the mail before they will ship. Most people on here know that as soon as the CFO approves it is good to go but some guys are really anal, and refuse to ship with verbal permission, but in this day and age I don't blame em.

A couple of inaccuracies here IMHO.

1) My LTATT was handled and filled out by me, I have not heard of a range doing it for you, things my be different in Alberta.
2) You do not have to wait until you get the letter. If you call the CFC and they tell you that the transfer is complete, she's ready to go after you get the STATT to take it to the post office as stated.

Mine was 3 hours :D Transfer was completed with the CFC on a Thursday at 4pm and was approved by the BC CFO at 10am the next morning. Good times in BC. Ontario on the other hand...:runaway:

my LTATT was taken care of by (i think) Barb in the alberta CFO.... I got my temp ATT paperwork faxed over to take my first handguns home, and when I called in to make sure the fax and everything went through, I said 'how do I get a LTATT' and she said 'I'll work that up off the same paperwork, youll have it in a week'

maybe things have changed in the last couple years, but it was dead simple.... it also probably helped I got my first handguns at TSE where I had the membership

1) In Ontario, your LTATT is tied to your club membership and is applied for by the club. Beyond that, I am not sure of the details, as I said. In Alberta, you simply call the CFO and they do it with you over the phone, then email you the finished document.

2) I never said you wait for the letter, I just said it was issued. As soon as the approval is given the gun can be shipped. I guess I should have clarified that part. To the OP, you can have the gun shipped as soon as verbal approval is given by the CFC or your CFO.

I wish that was how it was done here.

No you didn't it's just that most people assume that they have to.
 
And in Ontario the temp ATT is issued with the transfer notification. You dont need the physical copy to even be faxed. All you need is the ATT number and the registration number of the gun and your good to go. And yeah I hate it when sellers think they have to wait for the paperwork. That is just for your records in case the RCMP f ck up the transfer in their system. I have had to explain this to a couple people on here, and called the CFO myself to clarify the first time I sold a gun.
 
Well, after buying my first handgun, and sending the Money out to a fellow CGN member, he called it in, gave me a reference #. So I just called in the Firarms Registration office, and gave them my information, including what club I plan on joining, and the reference #, the lady I talked to said that the information will now be sent to the rcmp for approval, and I will recieve the information in the mail 10-14 business days.

Sorry to beat a dead horse here, but correct me if Im wrong. Now, once I get this information, I can let the seller know that it has been approved and he can call me in a Temp ATT, and a # will be issued to him, then and there over the phone, that he can give to me, then he can ship it out to me.

The lady said after I tell him the # I recieve in the mail is all I need to tell the seller, then he can ship it to me, and if I plan on taking it to a club to go shooting then I will have to call in to get a Temp ATT, until I am a member of a club and can get my regular ATT. I think I either heard her wrong, or she said it wrong because that did'nt sound right to me, so which one is it?

Then when I recieve my first handgun in the Mail I can dance around the house and giggle like a little schoolgirl on christmas morning, while my wife takes pictures of me with my new gift.
