I bought a bunch of Portuguese 556 NATO surplus and i have a AR the upper has no caliber markings on it i heard if its chambered in 223 only i could hurt my gun? i bought the gun used the only markings is a keyhole mark on the upper no markings on the barrel and the lower is a CMMG any thoughts??

Do you know the manufacterer of the barrel? I am new to the black rifles myself, but I would shoot it untill you can do research to see if its chambered for 5.56 IMO.

I believe that mark is from Cerro Forge. IMO, you should see if it feeds the 5.56 reliably that might tell you the answer.

When in doubt go over to AR15.com and they should be able to help you out.

You should maybe try reading the sticky at the top of this page. This has been going on ad nauseum.

I second his question. Like 7.62x39, I wish there were swelling surplus supplies of 5.56x45 on the market. You would figure there would be after the Cold War ended...

yes you can shoot 556 from a 223. there is no diffrence except the thickness of the brass. military brass is thicker than civie brass. so if you reload you will have less powder volume. its very very safe to shoot.

In before the #### storm over this statement, even though the chances of something bad happening shooting 556 out of an ar are slim to none.

i shoot 556 in 223 all the time and vice versa. the manufactures got you beliveing that there is a diffrence. there is none except the thickness of the brass. to belive so is crazy. if you dont belive me try it yourselves. i must shoot 5000-15000 556 and 223 every year. no diffrence. the guys in afganistan shoot what they are given, some from diffrent countries. take off your tin foil hat people. its safe.

and for those of you not wearing the tinfoil hat, its time to leave moms basement. dont be mislead by the hype.
