I got a couple free gun rest bags with a purchase today. I've never actually had a pair that weren't filled already. So I have a question...

What can I fill them with that's cheap and readily available other than sand?

Home Depot play ground sand, very fine and heavy and cheap as in $6 bucks for a 50lb bag. Fill the bags and use the rest on your side walks, or chuck in the back of the vehicle for extra winter traction.

On the little bags that are on top of some bench rest bags I use even finer sand that can be bought in any Hobby/crafts store for around $8 bucks a 1LB. I find the finer sand works better on the top bags as it packs better, and allows for better/smoother elevation adjustments if squeezing together.

I made some bags and use poly beads ( stuff they use for kids bean bag toys ).

Same here, you can get a large bag at a craft store, good enough for 2-3 bags. I threw them in an old us army sock and it works great. They are extremely light and not affected by moisture. Rice, peas etc are ####ed if they get wet, sand is heavy if you have to lug it around...

Thanks, you guys are freakin' awesome!

The aquarium gravel and poly beads sound like the trick. Sand is heavy and messy if it leaks. And the natural products like beans are too tempting to my Lab (and I didn't even think about mice).
