Praise for Higginson's powder's

Did Tom die recently, or was he a third generation Higginson? When I started shopping there two years ago there were two men, father and son; I never caught their names. Last few times I stopped by I was served by the son, but I didn't think anything of it... If Tom was indeed the older gentleman behind the counter I'll be sad to learn of his passing.

Uncle and nephew, I thought was the combination, perhaps I'm mistaken FS

personally, i would really like to see you run a buisness in the manner that they do. with the economy and the political situation in northamerica, more particularly the usa being the way it is, not everything is avalable. im sorry you had a poor experience with higgs, but as stated in the title of this thread, PRAISE FOR HIGGINSONS POWDERS, not s**t on them because you dont understand the world as it is today. you know what i do when i need somthing? i march my ass down to the store and buy it. i dont just sit at my computer and wait for somone to knock on my door with what i want. moral of this story? if you want somthing NOW, get up and get it yourself. good day to you sir!

Sounds to me like you could just jump in your vehicle and drive to Higgs. If we had a discount powder house out west here, pehaps many of us would do the same. That said I have ordered product from Higginsons many times and I do it because of the final pricing of the product is the BEST. But I have done my fair share of waiting as well. Never 10 months mind you.
I have always had good communication and I never ordered any products that were not in stock at the time I placed my order.
Pretty sure if you were looking for Varget powder 10 or 12 months ago there was an extreme wait required. FS

lannard:
Perhaps you should reread my post.
You obviously lack comprehension of what you read. Note that I gave them two chances. They took my money ten months ago and have not delivered as promised, nor have I had any coherent explanation.
As it happens I have run my own business. Quite successfully I may add.
I will not praise those who have wronged me. Nor do I suffer fools gladly.
Potential customers need to know that all is not perfect in Higginson Land.
Good day to you,Sir.

It really amazes me that a gentleman with only nineteen posts, and whom no one knows here, posts as though he is the real authority on a business that has been carried on successfully for more than forty years!

Andrew continues to do business in the same friendly and responsible manner as Tom did, always putting the customer first. Your unique experience is clearly not consistent with what everyone else has posted.

As a very wise old man once told me, there are always two sides to every story...............

What does my number of posts have to do with anything? I merely explained what MY experience with Higginsons was and that I would not deal with them again. At no time did I express any doubt that the majority have had good luck and no problems. As you point out "there are TWO sides to every story".. Mine is the second side.
I truly hope that most people continue to have good luck in their dealings with Higginsons. I obviously fell through the cracks- twice.
That's enough for me to not deal there again. It doesn't matter if it's mailorder or just down the street. I paid ten months ago and STILL have not received what I paid for. This is unacceptable no matter who the company is or what the product is.

P.S. for WHY NOT
If you ask around on this board (and several others that I am a member of) you will find that there are QUITE a few who know me personally, not hiding behind a computer as many do.

Perhaps if the tone of your previous post,

had been more like that of your last, we would have understood you better.

Best,

WHY NOT:
I DO apologize to the other members on this board.
I consider myself a reasonable person.
I should not have let lannard annoy me. At no time did I intend to cause anyone else any problem. I was irritated because all I did was relate my experiences and I was dumped on. I have a problem with that.
However I DID react unnecessarily harshly. I should have taken into account the source and ignored it.

I've dealt with Andrew for 10 years. The only complaints are about the things he has little control over. No sense is whinging about product he can't get when the rest of the continent is in the same boat.

Sorry to hear Firestick had a bad experience. I find it odd. I've never been charged for product that was out of stock. I was shorted on one order because between recieving the order and walking out to the magazine, some of the powder I'd ordered was picked for a prior order. I wasn't charged for powder I didn't recieve.

Not a problem, firestick. All of us, myself certainly included, have been down that road at one time or another.

Look forward to hearing more from you on the board.

The orriginal Tom owned the business and called it Ammo mart.
He then sold/gave business to his Nephew (Tom) and his son (Andrew) they changed the name to Higginson's Powders.
Untill very recently Andrews father (Tom #2) past away.
Tom will be missed by all who knew him including myself.
I always looked forward to my trips to Higginsons to
also to talk to Tom.
He was a great story teller with a wealth of life experiences and stories.

On another note, its a challenging business to be in with all the shortages and red tape.
Andrew can only ship what he gets in stock.
I have delt with them for @ 25 years and have always received great service.

firestick
pardon me for annoying you. i was a little bit worked up about hearing such a negative post on the subject. for one we are a breed of people who are struggling to stay afloat, as sportsman, so you can only imagine how hard it is for higgs. i sort of get defencive even about things like that. i feel that they dont need a stain on thier reputation to make it even harder. so i will appoligise to you for this, i must have read your post in the wrong context. i am also sorry that you will no longer be doing buisness with them, because every coustomer counts. regards, lannard

Thank you lannard
I do understand about being under siege from the antis. I also understand how difficult being in business is, especially when trying to deal with, shall we say, misguided bureaucrats. BTDT.
I was only trying to point out that sometimes things happen and people fall through the cracks. I'm glad that it happens to so few. Unfortunately I'm one.
You're absolutely right, every customer counts. In every business not just this one.
regards, firestick

i have never had a problem with them and my orders was always good. with todays supply problems they are doing a very good job as they usually have what i order.

Some of us here were dealing with them even before they were Ammomart. Anyone else remember XELEX? :)

They are truly one of the best, most customer oriented, companies in Canada.

Ted

Yes, Ted, I well remember when they were Xelex explosives. I started dealing with them as a teenager, in the very early 1960's. Several of us discovered that they could supply European made [mostly French] 22 rimfire ammo at a fraction of the cost of the stuff offered locally. We bought thousands and thousands of rounds of it. Much of it came in 100 round square boxes, and besides being a bit greasy, was quality ammo. Shortly after, once I started reloading, the powders came from Thomas. Powders originally were all surplus or overruns from the manufacturers. I bought and burned at least 75 lbs of RP-3 [Norma 203] and at least as much of some H4831 wannabe called HP48, and another much bulkier number, HP47. Still shooting 47N that we started getting decades ago. On and on it goes. Never once got stung by Higginson's. Never experienced a wait like firestick experienced, either [not questioning his word, though] I got a call from Thomas shortly after he had bought up all the powder left over when Imperial went out of the business of loading commercial ammo. He said: Dave, I acquired a fair quantity of a powder marked RP-5, do you want some? I said [knowing what the powder actually was already] Sure, how much? He says: If you buy more than 40 lbs I will give it to you for $X.00/lb. It was always packaged in 7 lb sacks in cardboard boxes, so I said: better give me 10 - 7 pounders. Wish I had ordered more! Still sitting on small quantities of WC755, CF8506, CF7900, W760SL10 and W760SL131. I'll continue to buy whenever I need larger quantities of the powders that Andrew carries now. I feel that my personal experiences over the past 4½ decades would have been somewhat less rich without XELEX/AMMOMART/HIGGINSON'S. Eagleye.

Thank you for the clarification, seems the two Toms were a source of some confusion. So they were indeed father and son. I'm saddened by the news of Tom's death, never knew him very well but always found him very courteous and extremely pleasant to deal with. His son shares his gentle disposition.

I love reading all the stories from the old-timers on the board. I knew Higginson's was a true institution in the area, but I'm only starting to grasp the extent of it.

Like I've said before though, you Westerners should get your own powder guy, leave more for us out here in anti-gun country!

Well I never heard of them till recently(being a dirty foreigner), and without bullets my .32 win special and my .22 hornet would be wall hangers.
None of the big names carry bullets in .321(or actually have any stock) and the 35 gr vmax my hornet likes have'nt been available in ages. I went up to Bass pro and Russels last summer, that was a waste of gas.
I phoned Higginson's, gave Hornady's stock code for the two bullets and Higginson's had them in stock. They were with me in about a week.
I will be ordering from them again, as Lethbridge Wholesale Sports is my nearest store and they rarely get bullets in.
