Hey guys so I did a search and couldnt find anything about this. I dont really have any experience with painting but I bought a black USGI synthetic stock and so now I need to paint the brown hand guard to match so what should I know?? type of paint? sanding? priming? Anything would help as I would like the paint to last a bit so Im not having to touch it up constantly.

I'd degrease with lacquer thinner, scuff with scotchbright, and paint with the rattlecan of your choice. Krylon Fusion is what i used because I used it on the stock first.

I agree
I customize and custom paint fiberglass stocks as part of my M14 custom services.
Lightly sand with 200 grit, then wipe with laquer thinner. Apply 3 or 4 even coats of KRYLON fusion grey primer. Then 2 to 3 coats KRYLON FUSION CAMO matte black.
Then, get some laquer matte clear coat , and apply 3 coats. I get the REVY brand clear as I can never fing krylon in a true matte clear.
This will provide an exceptional finish and good durability
Let it cure for 24 hours and install
