RCMP sidearms

I doubt they'll be switching from the 5946 anytime soon.

147 grain ammo Winchester hollow point or the Remington Golden Saber.

I found this picture on the net.

Was speaking with an RCMP Officer the other day at work and asked the same question.
She said the left leg holster contains the Tazer , also that the policy will be 9mm and that if change where to come it would take a very long time.
Change in the RCMP is very Political.
Dont know if this has been covered already but thought I would listen to myself type.

We are not allowed tasers in our detachment:redface:

The RCMP was one of the last forces to get rid of the .38 so it will be awhile before the upgrade to .40. In the meantime, the RCMP is actively demostrating "gun envy" by discouraging other agencies from acquiring the .40, including CBSA which ended up with the 9mm version of the PX4 Storm instead of the 9mm because it was RCMP "consultants" conducting the weapons evaluation and it is RCMP armourers who maintain them. I'd be surprised if other federal agencies, including Park Wardens and Environment Canada officers all carry 9mm due to RCMP interference as well.

9mm is the most popular pistol round, especially in some of the crappier parts of the world where the mounties work. It's always good to be able to use the ammo off your dead enemy.
I would like to see the Mounties get a newer pistol, I wouldn't want to carry that around for 12+hours, it is heavy!

If the Federal agencies all stay with the 9mm, it makes procurement of ammo a lot easier and cheaper and that's how big bureaucracies think.

I think choosing a pistol with a real trigger should be their first consideration. As to when any change might happen, who knows? I'm not sure what year they got their M-10s, mid 50's perhaps. In the mid '70s they were all excited about rumors that they would get 9mms. I don't think we need to hold our breath concerning a new RCMP gun for general issue.

Like most national governments in the Western World (and all NATO countries, including the US) the Government of Canada is a 9mm operation, if you work in an armed capacity for the Federal Government, you should expect to be armed with a pistol in 9mm. If you are issued a shoulder weapon, you should expect it to be in 5.56mm for the same reason, unless your specific task requires a specialist round (7.62x51 etc.) It simplifies everything on the order desk.

I would guess that this has NEVER happened in the history of the RCMP.

Picking ammo off your kills in some foreign hole is seldom a consideration when LE departments are choosing a duty caliber...

There are US Federal LE and Military units that are issued .40 and .45, it is not 9mm across the board.

I've shot the 5946 before. I found the best use for it was that it was just right for keeping the spare targets from blowing off the shooting bench in the wind.... ;) :p

one of the older guys at out clubhad something like it im not sure the exact model number but it looked liek the 5946,,,, i wasnt a fan

nothing wrong with the 5946. Been packing mine for over 7 yrs, always goes bang, always gets me in the 240's at annuals, decent trigger on mine. Sure, if it were up to me, I'd rather have a Sig or what have you but it is what it is and it won't be replaced any time soon. One thing you learn quickly as a member of the RCMP- no sense #####ing about things 'cause it won't change anything. :bangHead:

Probably not but it has the potential of happening. I was making a general reference to the availability of ammo throughout the world. Try finding 40 cal outside of North America. It is easier to procure 9mm than any other ammo. If you are working alongside the CF in Afghanistan why would you want a 40? not to mention most gang bangers and criminals carry 9mm. If they have spent their ammo they are more likely to reload a mag from a bad guy's gun if they are shooting the same ammo.

I don't think the US military has that many 40's and 45's out there compared to 9mm. Maybe 2%? as for law enforcement down there anything goes:)

This idea that re-supply in a far off country may be difficult is unrealistic. A RCMP member on duty in Afgan., going outside of base is usually issued a C8. When that's done the pistol is a last resort. If all the Police Members there took a couple hundred extra rounds they'd be fine (and probably never crack into them).

As for US LE, 9mm is nearly non-existent.

I was issued the 5946, it's OK, not great but not as bad as some make it sound. Way happeir with the Sig P226 now, with better scores accross the service as well (even going up to .40 from 5946 9mm).

Working along side CF in a far off place, armed only with a pistol, I would want the best stopping power I could get. 9mm is good, .40 is better. No guarantees that a pistol will stop anyone, even with mutiple shots, so more stopping power the better.
