22-250 twist rate

I'm looking at buying a lite coyote rifle in 22-250 and shooting a 50-60gr bullet. I would like a Tikka T3 or Sako A7 but the twist rate on the barrels is 1:14" Savage is 1:12".
My question is, will a 1:14" twist barrel stabilize a 50-60gr. bullet out to 500yards and if not, why would Beretta use a 1:14" twist on a rifle that is usually loaded with 45-55gr. bullets.

50 gr.... yes.... 55 gr.. should.......55gr is about the heaviest for 1:14. 60gr... should be 1:12.

1:14 is probably the most common twist for .22-250 as most people are looking to shoot in the 40-55gr category....

Of course this is a generalization.......Other factors play in the mix, velocity for one.....Especially if your using a bullet thats on the edge for your twist....
 
I favor fast twist barrels. I loaded some 53 gr TSXs, which are long for weight, for a co-workers .22-250 (1:14) and they didn't stabilize. IMHO the risk of over-stabilizing is more myth than reality as I could shoot light bullets very accurately in my 1:7 .222 and I can shoot light bullets very accurately in my 1:8 .308. The downside of the fast twist barrel is that the spin will cause thin jacketed bullets to come apart in the air. Conversely, slow twist barrels are only useful for short bullets, but a 1:12 should stabilize bullets up to the Speer 70 gr RN, which is short for weight.
 
Speed is everything in a varmint rifle. I would personally want minimal twist and very light bullets. 4200 fps+ and a light bullet is deadly to 500 yards on coyotes and has a very flat shooting trajectory.

I shoot coyotes all the time with a 204 ruger and 32 grain bullets (4200 fps) . 300 yards and no coyote ever took another step.
 
I have always recommended a 12 twist for a 22-250. It will handle the newer long 55 grain bullets as well as the lighter ones.

I always like high velocity in a varmint rifle too.
 
So if your recomending the 1-12 and say it loves 55gr,then what is your best suggestion for the 1-14.as thats what my remington VLS 22-250 is and I am told that 55gr is the best out of it at about 3900-4000 fps all done with Win 748.

It doesn't take a 12 twist for a lot of 55 grain bullets but the 12 twist will handle the new longer 55's and 60 grain bullets better than most 14's and it will still shoot the light short bullets just fine. There is no down side to a twist slightly more than required compared to a twist slightly less than required. In a varmint rifle the higher rpm of the faster twist also results in bigger blowups at the target. The only problem that may occur if you twist too fast is in extremely high velocities the bullet may blow up in the air. A 22-250 wont do that with any 50 grain or heavier.
 
On a more serious side,, I have heard a lot of excellent results with 52gr Bergers and 50gr BK's should have no problem stabilizing them.
 
I'm new to percision but I have a 1in7 twist 22-250 and it shoots the light stuff very well, 45gr and 55gr. Haven't tried the 75 to 80gr yet but it seems that I can shoot just about anything out if it.
 
My .22-250AI

Has a 1:12 twist, and I had a heavy dose of varget, which gave the 55gr pills 4225 fps..... Splat factor was quite large.....This was a little hard on brass,( a lot hard) I have since dropped down to berger 52gr at 4050 fps, brass life is great...

As obtunded said.......Velocity in a varmint rifle..
