I got this rifle on principle. Never let a gun out of the immediate family if you can help it. It is a TRG-21 in .308.

I was happy to take the rig, because (quite frankly) I have cabin fever and I am dieing to get out on some cut lines on my rhino this spring for some long distance shooting. The rifle was in extremely good condition or receipt, but something about the factory black combined with the stainless barrel didn't sit aesthetically with me. So I decided I'd make a project out of painting this puppy.

I always liked a Scheme used by Zak Smith for his AI rifles, so I decided to do something similar.

This thread will be a sort of progress marker for me, with notes on the different stages of production. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I am enjoying working with this fine gun.

Final product will see the barrel and sling swivel mount anodized, powder coated or duracoated.

Stage Two complete:

To be totally honest, I already like it almost exactly as is. I will play with a couple more masks until I am done though. The whole exercise gave me a great excuse to pick myself up a new inch-lbs adjustable torque wrench that made short, accurate work of the aluminum bedding chassis.

Masking patterns were made with strips of painters tape overlapped and then cut out with an exacto knife.

These pics not taken in natural light. Using cheapo service light to give enough to get some early pics out.

While I am at it, might as well paint a spotting scope to match.

Why not.

Actually it does look really good. I used to own a TRG 21 (same configuration as yours) and I wouldn't have imagined painting it.....Damn, I knew I should have kept that rifle.
Solid work!

I like having projects like this.

Open invites to drop by with a case of beer and some paint supplies and we'll paint up your bang stick

Krylon on stock. Will protect/seal plastic with 3 coats of clear acrylic matte.

Krylon on barrel is temporary but will easily get me through early shooting season without that big, shiny stainless barrel. I'm going to get the barrel and action duracoated (black or OD/I don't know) when I have the chance to take it to Corlane Sports in Dawson Creek.

Meanwhile, I think of the existing coat as prototyping the end product with inexpensive paint.

I'm in Grande Prairie.

Here is a suggestion for you. It does look really good but what about doing a thin line of a dark color around the dark green? Like maybe a 3/8" line in dark brown or similar.

Just a suggestion. Since you're in Alberta, I would check with Rick at Alberta Tactical. He does Cerakote which if more durable than pretty much any other coating (Duracote, GunKote, etc...).

Rick's awesome, but a long way away from me.

Corlane also rocks and is an hour out.

Phase 3 completed:

Used 90% mask. I started by cutting patterns, but honest to God it became rapidly apparent that torn pieces of tape overlapped together created the same end result as carefully considered layouts.

Go figure

These pictures taken prior to reinstalling trigger pack.

Next step is to let the paint set for 72 hours for any out-gassing. Then final run is to perform any final touch ups before applying 3 coats of acrylic matte clear.
