Not to get into a literal, "it's no fun to own one gun", but what are your thoughts on this...

Some guys use a different calibre and model each year, some have used the same for 40...

Discuss your thoughts, what you do and why?

I've owned enough, but now have narrowed things down to one rifle. I have a couple others, but they will probably mozy on out of here pretty quick. I used to love trading up or buying new but I can only use one at a time and I just want to get to know this little popper really good. :)

I have one rifle. Had a .30-06 first. It worked fine. Took a few deer with it. Left it in it's case after a particularly cold outing and it rusted. Touched it up and sold it for $50 less than I paid for it. Decided I wanted a 45-70, and bought a Stainless Guide Gun. Used it one season. Sold it and two shotguns to get money for the Weatherby I found at the Easter Gunshow a few years ago. 7mm Weatherby Magnum. The first rifle I could reload without taking it off my shoulder. I'm 5 foot 6 and Length of pull is usually too long. The 54 degree bolt lift sold me. Decided to keep it forever. Plenty of jam for as far as I'm comfortable shooting, and just fine at close range on the deer I've taken. Currently is getting rebarreled to the same calibre, and I'm making a stock for it. I see no point in getting a bunch of rifles. I just need to be good with one.

This makes sense. I noticed that I am moving towards that path.

Talking centerfires, I like to have 3. A 223 sporter for play and practice, a lightweight sheep / deer rifle, and a grizzly stomper. Right now those 3 are an 8-twist 223AI, a Pre-64 fwt 270 about to go in an edge compact stock, and a 358 Norma. They work about as well as any 3 rifles I can imagine.

I could do without the 35, but I really like having the 223 to shoot a lot for play.

I hunt with the same guns all the time.

But I do have a bunch of others that I take out for feild trips to the range.
There's nothing like buying a new gun, so i think a guy should always be trading up on something.

WTB....WTS, not much elese to do except shoot what you already have!

A lot of the one rifle guys I know are true Fudds. Dig it out of the closet only for hunting season. The "beware the man with one gun he likely knows how to use it" axiom just doesn't fit those guys.
I will never be in that group, even if I had just one, it'd be shot regularly.

My '94 Winchester 30-30 will always be my friend it's never let me down. If it came down to me owning just one, that would be it.

My grandfather had a 20ga that he killed dozens of deer, a number of bear, a bunch of coyotes and countless grouse and bunnies, he really was a "one gun" guy. It's now in my gun safe and is the only gun I would never part with.

Myself on the other hand, I prefer to have some variety, but I could probably narrow it down to a half dozen or so, and still be content. If I had to. I suppose.

for many years when i was raising a family i was a one gun hunter. ruger 300wm shot every thing with it. ended up burning the barrel out. now i shoot what ever interests me. last spring bears was 7 mag, fall hunting was a 338. i shoot a lot of different calibres and spring may find me using my 284. as long as i can afford it i will never be a one gun hunter. far too boring.

I have been looking for the perfect all in one rifle/cartridge combo for years, everytime I think I have it figured out I find some flaw and start looking at a new one!

Thinking my next one might be a Browning Longtrac Stalker in 270win!

Maybe I could go down to one shotgun, and one rifle. But even that would be tough.

I think the strongest factor in going down to one gun is our wives!!

What's that old line about guns being better than wives because you can keep two guns in the same safe and they won't get jealous of eachother?

I've owned every calibre except 416's and bigger. Have a 416 on the way. My favourites are: for handgun is the 10mm Baby Eagle, for varmint is .17HMR and 220 Swift, for deer is 270 and 7mm, for elk, moose and bear is 338 or 375. The 300's give me serious flinch now.At reasonable prices have had best luck with Tikka's, Savages are getting very good, Weatherby's just too damn nice for taking into the bush so they are in the safe. Disappointed with Remington, Winchester, Ruger, even CZ. Wish I could have lots of Coopers and Steyrs. still prefer wood over plastic. Use Sierra for targets and Partition for hunting. Always regret selling my Schultz and Larsens and model 55/65 Tikka's.

I had a ton of guns and just recently started shedding off the ones I didn't need. I had every gun I ever owned thinking I would never sell a single one. Then something changed. I sold one, then the other and so on. If I honestly had to pin down why I sold off so many guns I would say it would have to be the constant attack on gun owners and having to hear about how this or that is going to get banned etc. I want to enjoy my hobby and let it clear my mind, not fight tooth and nail to be allowed to do it. So the restricted and scary black guns went first. I am down to one center fire 2 rimfires (3 if I count the girlfriends as mine) and the first gun I ever owned a pellet gun (that one is going to my son/daughter as soon as they are born). I want to end up with a .22 a 12guage and a .30-06. I think these 3 guns cover it for me.

If I was forced to only own one gun, it'd be my Savage 24C; from .22CB all the way up to a 20ga slug and anything in between, it'll take any game that I hunt and could do more if asked.

But I'd rather have one of each type of gun. The list that I'm working on is:

Savage 24C for hunting and survival type situations (obtained)
Ruger 10/22 for all its plinking goodness (obtained)
Glock 17 with an Advantage Arms .22LR kit (obtained)

Lee Enfield MkV Jungle Carbine for larger game and longer range shooting (on the way)
Mossberg 500 Field / Security Combo for fun, defence, trap, etc. (back-ordered)

On the wish list, but not particularly needed are:
AR-180B-2
Colt 1911 with a .22LR kit
Undecided on make and model, but a modern scoped bolt action in .308 for long range precision shooting

Granted, there are many other guns that would be nice to have and would do what I need them to do just as well or better than the guns I already own or would like to acquire, but to each their own, right? :)
