Heres a couple of pics of my 91/30 mosin nagant and my svt-40.

One question for you guys out there that have experience with both of these rifles. Why is it that my 30cal bore brush fits nice and snug in my mosin and fits very lose in my svt barrel? There the same caliber give or take a thousandth of an inch, so what gives.
 
Is the MN a Finn re-barrel?

Sounds like the SVT has a 311 and your MN a 308.
 
Well, there were a lot of MN rifles made in a lot of different factories. You may have a tight 308/1000-inch Russian made one. I do too.

Sounds like the SVT has a.311 barrel then.
 
Nice rifles,

what year is your Mosin? A lot of the midwar rifles have poor quality control - (I own several, GREAT rifles, dont let this sway you), and as such you can get a small difference in bore size. 1942 and 1943 Izhevesk rifles tend to have the most rushed workmanship and these rifles commonly have the biggest variation in bore sizes that I have seen. Is the rifle a refurb? what shape are both the barrels in?

In regards to what brushes will work, anything .30 should work good enough. A .303 (.311) bore snake works wonders I found
 
If you haven't slugged them do that and let us know the bore diameters. Any 30 cal brush will do, buy a bunch if they're cheap.

As long as the bullet is the right diameter you're good to go. I've found my mosin (.313 dia barrel) shoots a 150gr .311 bullet better than a 180gr .313 bullet. Go figure.

The mosin is a 1942 Issy, and the svt is a 1940 Tula There both refurbs, but I refinished the stock on the mosin. The mosins bore is bright with a fair crown. The svt is a little dark with some slight pitting. But I can definitely say that a 30 cal bore brush is to small for my svt. It barley makes contact with the bore when I push it through.
 
Well it doesnt seem as though your SVT is shot out, it wouldnt be after a refurb. My guess is your Mosin may be a bit small on the bore side, the best way to find out is to "slug the bore"
