I am planning on buying a Hammond Game Getter for potting grouse and bunnies while big game hunting. I have a Marlin 30AS in .30-30 and a Savage 99 in .308(detachable mag) with a fixed 4x scope. I carry them both equally often, sometimes literally switching 3 or 4 times a day depending on if I'm driving, walking, in a stand etc. Are there any reasons why one gun would be better suited than the other, any deciding factors I'm missing? Buying one of each isn't an option financially right now. Thanks in advance.

No matter which one you buy it will be the other rifle you will have when you see what you want to use it on. Buy one now and save up for the other.

id go for the 308 i had one i 30 30 and it didnt work very good because the pin was to short but the ones were the blank gets hit by the rifles pin works every time

I think that Wade is on the right track. You can also buy some 100 grain plinkers or some cast bullets for the same job and they would be cheaper than a Game Getter and fit both rifles.

just my opinion

The Game Getter is a waste of money. Load up some small game loads using pistol powder as Wade said. Better way to go IMO. I have small game loads for many of my big game rifles.

These were all shot using my .270 using a 130g SP and 9 grains of Unique powder. No more meat damage than a .22LR would do and shoot exactly 2" high at 20 yards. Small game loads are very quiet as well.

Many grouse have fallen to this load:

I found them a PITA to load quickly. If you come across a flock you get one the rest have left by the time you reload.Only use I had for them was finishing deer/antelope with a single brain shot.I had a .32ACP adaptor for a 30-30 that was far superior to the Hammon unit...............Harold I'm going to handload a cast bullet[ for .30 Mauser /93gr .311] with Unique in all my .30 calibers for chickens .No dickin around juggling components to reload.

I like my GameGetter. Yep. PITA to reload quickly. Not been a huge issue, so far.

If you carry both calibers equally, and decide to go that way, talk to Brian and see about getting a kit with both cartridge adapters and only one sizer and punch. They both use the same size ball.

Cheers
