Need a little guidance...

Ok, i am looking to set up a target rifle, and I have decided to go with a comercial tactical rig as opposed to a custom 'cause I am poor ;).

I have narrowed it down to 3 maybe 4 rifles.

1. Remington 700P .308

2. Savage 10FCP McMillan .308

3. T/C Icon/Warlord .308

And I read a thread about a new Winchester tactical Model 70 Stealth, which I know nothing about.

I was hopeing for a little pro's and con's on these models to help me with a little more info than what the ads say.

I am hopeing to top it with a Horus Vision Hawk, if I can find a way to get one. Any other suggestions on entry level optics appreciated. I kinda like the rangeing rectical on the Horus. It has been a while since I had to use mils and come-ups.

Only #1 and 2 are really worth looking at, and those will be $1500+- without optics and they may or may not shoot well. Your best bet is to keep an eye out on the EE for a used rifle, depending on the budget and use.

Everyone is going to say don't go cheap on optics, buy once cry once....The bushnell 3200 tactical fixed 10x scope is cheap and many use them. It still depends on what you are looking to do with this rifle.
 
Mostly will be target shooting, and plates, Hope to push 800m, used to be able to do it, kinda out of practice. Also have the option on deer, every once in a while theres the big bugger on the other side of the coulee, that leaves me saying I wish I had a... for this shot!
 
So what kind of a budget are you looking at? If you plan to shoot targets at 800m and hunt with it, you will need a variable scope in the 6.5-24 area, low enough for close deer shots, with enough "oomph" for the long shots. A decent scope in that area will be 800-1200 by itself.
 
I am comfortable with the .308 and its balistics, also set up to reload for it, punched a lot of holes with it with the forces. Also for hunting purposes, I personally like a 30 cal. Was thinking I would go bigger with a 300WSM, But decided to stick with .308 Win. I don't really need the extra energy, at the ethical ranges I would choose to hunt at.
By the way I currently hunt with a Mod. 70 heavy barrel varmint, in .308. I would like to upgrade to a tactical type set up.
 
For the money you plan on spending, you could get a trued up Rem, with a custom barrel, tuned trigger, bedded. and a good scope.
 
Thought about restocking, but the barrel is not in tip top shape any more. Besides, I need a new toy.

As for noneck180's suggestion, that is why I am snooping around here. I have not been shoping for a long time. Just now getting serious. Tel me more.
 
If you can find an older VS, or VSF, that already has a an HS stock,, they can be found around $700-900, all you would need is a smith to do the rest, for $1000 you should have your gun done, with barrel cambered, true lugs, bed, and tune fac trigger. Then have $1000 for a scope like a Ziess Conquset 6.5-20x50mm , picatinny rail,, TPS rings.

Or get a used SPS $500,, buy HS stock $350-450 and get the smith to do the rest,, and get Leupold, picatinny rail TPS tings,, the options are endless, but I wouldn't buy a new Rem for 1400 with a fac barrel. Again opinions are like........ and everyone has them.

Not if it needs a barrel as well, which may be a good idea anyway.

You forgot the cost of the new barrel and smithing (if need be) from your equation above.

Rem 700 Action can be had for $500 (usually action only)
Stock $350-$450
Barrel $450ish
Action Trueing $150ish
Chamber, Crown and Install Barrel $250ish
Bedding $100-$150
Trigger tune $20-$50

These may be slightly on the high side but better to come under budget than spend more than you anticipated.

Might be a little more than you are looking to spend on a build but it would be worth it in the end, and with .308 you would be good for 5000-9000 rounds before needing a new barrel.
 
I agree 100% Buy any old short action remington or savage beater (hopefully with rust so it's cheaper) and sell the stock for $60 and the barrel for $50 and get a smith to thread a really good barrel on it for you or buy a savage pre threaded, bed it in a nice stock and you'll be way farther ahead over anything factory.

See, I figured you guys knew what you were doing! Ok, so now a new question, Which is the better action/trigger? I would have assumed Remington, and totally discounted the Savage. My brother had a Savage 110 I think it was, in 30-06. Really didn't like it at all. Also who would you recomend to do the work in question? And lastly, for the time being, I'm of the opinion that .308 is the way to go. I have considered .300 WSM as I mentioned above, is it still worth considering?

I have a series of articles that can help you on your way.

With your $1500 budget for a rifle, you can get a match accurate rig based off a Savage or Stevens. Add $1000 for a Sightron SIII LR scope and you have a rig that can keep up with mega dollar customs.

If 308 ballistics is what you want, a fast twist 223 will meet and beat it for 1/2 the cost and 1/3 the recoil. I plink out to 1500yds with mine.

If you want better ballistics, there are so many better options.

The 30's are great if you want to put a hurt on something far out but the price is a lot of recoil and moderate ballistics.

All the popular options from the 6BR to the 7mm's will simply blow the 30's away.

I use this scope in F-class. I plan to upgrade later, but for now, it gets me in the game. I paid just over $500 for it 2 years ago.

Everyone keeps pointing you in the direction of buying a Remington then changing the stock, barrel, trigger etc. You already have the Mod 70 I would just rebarrel and restock it. That way instead of having a Mod 70 with an iffy barrel, you end up with a new toy that will shoot like a house on fire.
 
That would be my choice as well. M-70s shoot, the rifleman's rifle and all that, and a custom barrel and stock wouldn't be a budget breaker. You'd probably be about $1500 even allowing for the gunsmithing, which leaves you enough for a nice piece of glass.
