OK, heres the story. I didn't get the Colt directly from my grandfather although it was still registered to him many years after he died. My father once told me he confiscated the gun from his father. There must be an interesting story there, but I never learned it. I found the gun stored amongst my father's stuff after he died. Since dad was the executor of his father's estate and I was the executor of my father's estate I was able to have the gun legally registered to me. I have to say the Firearms Center was very helpful in getting this done for me.

I showed the gun to my son, who is not renewing his PAL, and he was only mildly interested in it. It won't be a treasured family keepsake and will only be picked up by the police for destruction after I die. I am not a collector. I would rather see the gun go to someone who can appreciate it than try to keep it in my family.

I know many other gun owners have sentiments attached to some of their favoured pieces whether they be purchased or inherited. If I had a family member who I thought would appreciate the gun I would see that they got it. Thats not the case with me I'm sorry to say.

Your situation is all too common.

There must be another option. I'm thinking of an ability to place something in trust, preserved for the future generations until a future relative would choose to claim it. There must be a museum that would accept it on a long-term loan. If your son changed his mind later, it would be there. When your grandchild became of age, if he wanted it, it would be there. And - even if he didn't - when his child became of age, if he wanted it, it would still be there.

There must be a museum that would accept this pistol on loan.

Anybody???

for the gun it came from russia ...
to help russia , USA sent planes , trucks , and jeeps to russia during WWII , in the trucks and the jeeps , the USA put a 1911A1 for the drivers
but russians cant use those weapons beacause they dont use .45 ammunitions , so they put it in stock , and sell it recently ( with lot of thompson , mauser 98k ... ) to armorers
my armorer sell me this gun the same price he sold the ithaca and the remington he has bu the same way

for the convertion , i bought it at a gun sho in las vegas , and give it to customised to my superior , an old weapon specialist , very good in gunsmithing

I actually saw a US&S frame with a Remington Rand slide 1911A1 pistol in a display in the WWII museum off the main town square in Ste Marie du Mont, Normandy, France this past June 6th when I was on my visit to the Normany area for the 65th anniversary celebrations of the D-Day landings. Took a pic but have to sort through the thousands I took in 3 weeks to find it though.

Ste Marie du Mont was captured on the morning of June 6th 1944 by US airborne forces, including elements of E company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne [Band of Brothers]. This little town is just up from Utah Beach.

I saw that one as well. I am going back this year! :dancingbanana:I am trying to figure out what I should bring back from the various military antiques dealers. France, then Belgium, I can hardly wait!

The building that is the museum today in Ste Marie du Mont is just to the right in this 1944 picture showing members of the 101st Airborne in the town square:
