.45 ACP Shortage?

Ya, well the gun store here was ready to sell 500 S&W ammo to a customer that just purchased the .50 A&E. The owner says " I think it should work, hold on I'll ask my armourer" Myself and the armourer both say "NO", the owner had to be told that one is a straight walled cartridge, the other for an autoloader. Then the owner says to me " I should know this shouldn't I?"
OMFG

Im having a hell of a time finding .45ACP ammo in Nova Scotia. Ive tried 3 places and the only guys that sell it want $39 bucks for 50 rounds. It wasnt that long ago, and I mean a few months ago, that this stuff was $19 for 50..im not sure of the types of ammo but for shooting paper $19 for 50 rounds sounds sweet.

Everyone seems sold out. I have a NEW 1911A1 I got for Christmass and I havent even fired it yet!

I heard a similar story as the OP, more or less high demand from police/ army due to two wars and civilians making things even worse by "hoarding" ammo- they think it is scarce so they buy lots leaving none in stock, making the ammo shortage a reality.

Lequils....spelling, the Kwick Way down in Annapolis NS, the guy said that the governments "stockpile" ammo until a specific quota is reached so .45acp and 5.56 nato would be in short supply. He noted that he HAD 30 boxes of .45acp but one guy came in and BOUGHT ALL OF THEM. You greedy SOB!!! Think of me and my new unfired gun while you shoot! LOL

Here in Vancouver I just spend $291 on 500 rounds (2X250) of 230gr Remington UMC. Can't say how much they may have had at Reliable but I left a small stack of 250 round boxes there. Till tomorrow anyway...

I still can't figure out which military is using all of this 'missing' 45 Auto, given that even the US is largely a 9mm outfit - more like the store owner is trying to wait until his trade show orders come in :D

No shortage where I am at either I believe. I'm surprised they were selling hollow points. I don't think they are illegal but the shop here doesn't carry them in any caliber afaik. I only shoot 9mm as of late and they had 5 different varities of 9mm loads, none were hollow points.

Yeah we all know that you take whatever you hear from someone in a gunshop with a grain of salt.

Went into the local gunshop today and this was the conversation with the guy behind the counter:

Me: "What do you suggest in the way for .45 ACP for a 1911?"
Clerk: "Whatever you can get."
Me: "What do you mean?"
Clerk: "There is a shortage of .45 ACP ammunition right now."
Me: "A shortage?!"
Clerk: "Yes."
Me: "Forgot to place an order?"
Clerk: "No it's just hard to get right now for everyone."
Me: "Do you have anything in stock?"
Clerk: "I think we might have something."

*at this point he asks the owner if they have any in stock and the owner points to two boxes on the shelf*

Clerk: "This says .45 Auto, is that the same stuff?"
Owner & Me: "Yes."
Owner: "ACP stands for Auto Colt Pistol."
Me: "So what is it and how much?"
Clerk: "Fiocchi .45 Auto Hollow Points. $34 a box."
Me: "Well if that's all you got I'll take it."

So I didn't even know there was a .45 ACP shortage until today. I should go to town more sooner :D

Perhaps your shop does have a shortage of .45 ACP, but they are overstocked on .45 Auto according to that clerk :)
