Cooey 60 project: Pics & Range Report (pic heavy)

nice camo job, when i first looked at it i thought why the hell are you hanging your scope in a tree? took me a sec to see the rifle :)

Nice camo....at first I was like why did he put a scope in the tree:p

lol, someone beat me to it :)

I've seen some other threads asking about Cooey 60 trigger jobs and worn out trigger parts, so I thought I'd get my butt in gear and post some details on what I've done with mine.

The first three pics show what the sear looked like originally...

...and this is what it looks like after some careful rework with a file.

I clamp the bolt in a soft jaw vise have at it with the file until I achieve the shape I'm after to get a reasonably light and crisp trigger pull. Prop the hammer out with little piece of split hose to keep it out of the way of the file. Then I polish the sear by taping strips of progressively finer sandpaper to the file- 600, 1500, and 2000grit. I have also clipped about one coil off the trigger spring. It's a little finicky to re+re and I wouldn't want to clip off any more than one coil, but everly little bit helps.

I tried dropping the rifle butt on the floor from 6" or 8" to make sure it wouldn't bump fire.

The result was a trigger that breaks at 2 1/4 lb with a fraction of the creep the original sear had.

Very nice job on a handsome rifle!!:) Just picked one up for $50 and figured it would be a great first project. Sanded all the metal with 320 grit then shot it with 3 light coats of satin black Tremclad. When it was dry I baked it in the oven @200-250 for 1 hour or so. The paint is now REAL hard. Have re-made the trigger gaurd out of .050" titanium which will be heat oxidized blue and will re-make the butt-plate out of some antique brass.
Will post pics when its done.

Look forward to your pics. They're great old rifles.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit it  , but with the Cooey 600 I had enough trouble with the bolt-handle and the side-scope-mount that I just decided to use the scope & mount on my Cooey 39 instead :) , and left my 600 unscoped.....;)....probably was an easy-fix :( that I just have yet to wrap my mind around.....:yingyang:....maybe I'll start looking for a Cooey 600 with the dovetail?

COOL VID ! I may have missed it, but what scope do you have on it?
It's the Cabelas Pine Ridge rimfire in 3-12X40

Those bolt handles can be bent to a more desirable shape pretty easy. All you need is a soft jaw vise and a rubber mallet. ;)

I'm going to be dead honest here at the chance I will be mocked... For about 10-20 seconds I was saying to myself. "Why does he have a scope in a tree!?!?" Great camo job!!!

Thats an awesome camo job. I did a double take and only saw the scope in the tree at first. Great job on the rifle. Also nice grouping. Those cooey's really can shoot.

All I can say is, don't lean it against a tree and then walk away...you might never find it again...nice job!

I thought the same thing. He better put a sling on it, if he sets it down to take a piss, it will be gone forever. Might just as well walk in the bush and just chuck it and walk back out.
