The best fit and finish, looks, reliability, materials, etc.

I really like the lesser Springfields but Made in Brazil kind of makes me go "Hmmmm".
Kimber has some beautiful ones, though I hear problems with them.
S&W and Colt don't seem to make guns in that price range?

Doesn't have to be an ultimate tack driver just a good all round 1911 for the price.
Thoughts?

STI Spartan? Check out Freedom Ventures' and STI sites. I got one and am very happy with it.
They run in $800 range new.

I've never been crazy about Springfield's Made In Brazil provenance, either, but the fact remains that thousands of them have been shot hard in IPSC since the eighties, and people, big names, have won lots and lots of big matches with them. Truth be told, I've seen far worse sh*t come out of the Connecticut union shop at Colt.

My knee-jerk answer, though, would be a secondhand STI Trojan. Better-than-average set of enhancements on that pistol, out-of-box. If you can get past it being named after a brand of rubbers, put your hands on one somehow, and see for yourself.

I guess STI and some Brazilian Springers could work, but it's my experience that nothing that has ever been outsourced came back as good as it once was.

For your budget, if its brand new, gotta be a Kimber Custom II. IMO, as I have said in other posts, KIMBER's got the best trigger action "right out of the box" plus they're very accurate. The problem I heard off were from the early II models -something to do with the extractor but that was immediately fixed. If I'm correct, they reverted back to the original extractor (that was 2+ years ago).
Got the .45 acp "fever" since many moons ago and it never left. Your budget can get you an excellent used .45. All my current .45's have come from the EE and they are all great shooters.
STI Trojan, Kimber, DW, Colt are the ones I'd focus on. They all shoot plus have value and looks to go with them. Good luck shopping. Post pics of what you end up buying and don't forget to share your range impressions. Happy shooting!!!!

Haven't received it yet but just won this Colt Combat Elite (see pic) from the EE for under your budget. Can't wait for it to arrive!!!! Wife still doesn't know I bought it - my goose is cooked! I will soon be dead meat!!!

Beautiful! Maybe i should step up my budget for a Kimber Royal II?
I saw one on a site for 12-something.
Or the EE is a good idea too. :)

I'd recommend a Taurus 1911. you can get a stainless loaded 1911 for $1000 with tax incl. and spend another $100 on mags or ammo :)

had mine for over a year and haven't had any isses

There is a Trojan for sale in EE right now, seems as a very good choice.

+1 on the Trojan. Just saw the listing - that's an excellent choice. Fits the OP's budget and, unlike the Spartan, its built in the USA!!! Looks like the seller has taken excellent care of it too!!! And the search goes on!!!:D
