I was just watching Guns & Ammo Television, and they had a segment on Hornady, making new 7.62x39 ammunition. They were saying that they felt like it was time that someone finally made good quality expanding hunting ammunition, now that there are new, accurate hunting rifles coming out chambered for 7.62x39.

This is great news for guys like myself that use a SKS for deer hunting. I just hope that it makes it way up here to Canada fast.

On the Episode of Guns & Ammo on Wild TV, were they were showing the Hornady bullets, they were talking and showing that the 7.62x39 V-Max bullets were much more accurate, and expanded better than any other hunting ammunition out there for this Calibre.

The V-Max bullets are suppose to be good for hunting also from what it says on their website they say :

Streamlined design for ultra flat trajectories.
Match grade jacket design provides maximum accuracy at all ranges.
Explosive expansion, even at low velocities

Quoted from the V-Max Bullet webpage.

I have'nt ever been able to get my hands on some Remington ammo in this calibre, but hopefully this will be widespread up here. It seems like the best hunting ammo ever available in this Calibre.

The V-Max is a thin skinned varmint bullet meant to come apart very early upon impact. Anything less than a sure kill shot would venture into the regions of in-humane. And, I'm pretty sure they just weren't designed for any amount of penetration.
It will be an excellent varmit round but anyone shooting big game with vmax bullets needs a :kickInTheNuts:

I did'nt know that. They must of been talking about Varmint hunting. I recorded the show, so I will have to replay it and pay more attention to it, to see what exactly they were talking about when they figured it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Here in Ontario, I have a Bell Express Vu Satelite. I have a package with Wild TV channel 389. This is in S.W.Ontario. It only costs me $1 a month for the channel. It has alot of cool shows, like Guns and Ammo tv, shooting usa, tactical impact, just to name a few.

If you have Bell satelite, I think you have to just call them up to order the channel. I have had it for 3 years now. It does'nt show up in red if you don't order it. You have to call, to get it.

Thank you. I am in Vancouver. Bell is not as popular as telus tv

We don't even have Telus TV in Ontario, just Telus Cell phones. Never heard of it actually. I would say people in Ontario is 40% Bell satelite,50% Rogers cable, and 10% starchoice satelites.

The more important question is...How strong are the primers?

Having an SKS slamfire would not be fun.

Considering that Hornady is buying the pre-primed steel cases from somewhere in Russia (who if I'm not mistaken also supplies Wolf ammo) -- my guess is -- "hard enough"

:)

I'd rather not guess when it comes to matters of personal safety, so I would have to see some hard data before I tried it myself. :D

Besides which hard primers that work for the SKS don't work well for other rifles in 7.62x39, such as the Mini 30.

Meh.. if you have gun pointed down-range/safe direction when you pull the trigger on a live round, then a slam-fire is a non-issue. I'm not convinced slam-fire is all that common, either. I've banged off some Winchester primed hand-loads in my SKS, with zero slam-fire (and if you can get primer cups any softer than those brass Winchester ones, I dunno what they are).

YMMV.

I am glad that Hornady is offering an option - too bad that it is too much money to do the average CZ or SKS guy or gal any real good. Yah sure it offers something for hunting varmints, but I want non corrosive ammo - that doesn't break the bank.
