Hi All,
I'm just wondering how receiver sizing works on an 870. Will a 3" shell go in any receiver if you have a barrel chambered for 2-3/4"-3" or are there different 870 receivers for just 2-3/4" and 2-3/4-3" shells? If so how do you tell what size shell your receiver takes? I guess what I'm asking is if I put a 3" chamber barrel on a receiver that originally came with a 2-3/4" only barrel will it work and will it fire 3" shells?

You cannot shoot 3 inch shells with the new (3 inch chamber) barrel, because the ejection port on the 2 3/4 inch action is not long enough.
Also, the bolt in the 2 3/4 inch action doesn't travel far enough to the rear to allow a 3 inch shell to feed from the magazine into the action, before being fed forward into the chamber.

In short, you can't feed a 3 inch shell from the mag into the chamber, and you couldn't eject it, either, using a 2 3/4 inch action, regardless of the length of the chamber the barrel has.

870 receivers are different! Check your serial number. I'm assuming you have a 12 ga. If it ends with an "M" you have a magnum receiver that will work with both 2 3/4" AND/or 3" shells. If not 2 3/4" is your only option.

Um - yes and no. There is some confusion. Technically, the only thing you need to shoot 3" shells out of a 2 3/4" receiver is a new ejector spring (the one that's riveted inside). I've never done it, but apparently it can be done. Dimensionally, they are the same. There are some OLD OLD 870 receivers with a smaller ejection port, but all the new ones are the same size.

Of course, you'd need a 3" barrel!

This is always true? I was looking at a gun with 2-3/4" barrel and no "M" in the serial # but wanted to put a 3" barrel on it so I'll keep looking. Thanks,
