AR Guys: Whats the proper way to set up flip sights and optics?

can you get the thumb screws separate? or perhaps a QD hardware piece to add to my YHM riser??

Thumb screw should be included with your Eotech unless you have the quick detatch  check the box.
I've seen raiser with quick detach, so maybe it worth it to sell yours and buy one of those.
I like the thumb screw, no issue with it as long as you tight it WITH YOUR FINGERS and not a screwdriver, and blue locktight. Mark the position of the screw for quick check.

If your RDS goes down, shouldn't you be using it as a ghost ring cowitness to Front Site? :D

Your riser is too high -- scrap it and get a Larue EO mount, or scrap it entirely.
Better yet Scrap the EO too and get an Aimpoint...

Ideally you want a bottom 1/3rd co-witness - the irons sit in the bottom 1/3rd of the CCO viewing windon.
When you drop your head to the irons the dot will appear to move and you will still get co-witness - if your that way.

Using the top of the dot, you can get very precise aiming.
Chris Costa was done here two weeks ago, and with a T-1 on a SR-25EM Carbine he shot a bunch of sub 1/2MOA groups at 100yds - he shoots a bit, so don;t expect everyone can hold the dot to the same place he can.

I prefer to zero irons first - at 50m
the put the optic on -- why.
Well I use the irons the same way regardless of what optic I mount, I can add CCO's and just dial the dot onto the irons.
For Mag optics, it still need to zero them specifically, but I don't usually zero them to 50m...

Bottom third for me as well.

I can't understand why guys insist on setting up / co-witness with the irons right in the middle of your field of view blocking your view through the optic. As Kevin said, if you need your irons, just drop you head/eye down to the bottom third of the optic and pick them up. That way they don't clutter your view.
