M44 or 1891/30?

I have the 1944. I love the gun. Fun to shoot and cheap for both gun and ammo.

Buy a case of surplus ammo. 720 rounds for 199.00. Pull the bullet and replace fmj with hunting bullet. Cheap and easy to do.

Not so sure you can still find surplus for that price anymore. Youd probbaly be looking at more like $300 or more for a case of 800 round of Czech surplus.

If you can find it at that price, buy every case they have.

It's a better investment than stocks and bonds. You'll be able to make a 50% return on your money overnight.

The recoil isnt something im too worried about, as far as the hand loading goes I just dont have the space to do it :(. I'm also afraid im gonna blow my self up lol!

I wouldn't worry about that at all. I was in a small townhouse when I started reloading my own ammo. I just used a board to fasten my press to, and clamped it to my PC desk when I needed it and worked from there. I must have done at least a thousand rounds worth of .303, 7.62x54, and .308.

Shooting a Nagant, you pretty much have to reload. The commercial stuff is expensive and not worth what you pay for it. The charges vary and the bullets are drastically undersized. Most Nagants have bores around the .310 to .313 mark, and most commercial ammo is .308... not good. Surplus isn't much better, either.

So invest in a starter kit from Lee, you'll save a ton of money and get better rounds as a result.

PS: I'd go with a 91/30

Sellier & Bellot makes some really nice modern versions of the cartridge, in FMJ and soft point. Nice brass as well.

I've hunted with a 91/30 and with a 22-inch barrel Mosin-Nagant short rifle I made out of parts and as far as packing around I couldn't tell the difference in weight or handiness.

I'm going to be using it for hunting but also target shooting aswell. Another question, is there lots of milsurp ammo around as well as comercial hunting loads?

No and... depends where you buy your bullets :p

Dribs and drabs of milsurp pop up but nothing like 7.62x39. Keep an eye peeled on the EE. My local gun shop orders in Prvi Partizan SP for me at about $26/20. Boxer brimed so obviously you keep the brass.

Thanks alot for all the helpfull information. I will put some thought into reloading for sure. Seems like the most cost effective way to feed the mosin nagants.

I picked up a small supply of commercial Norma hunting ammo at gun shows over the years for about $20 a box, 1/3 the commercial price.
