Redhawk Grips?

1) Any sources for nice wood grips to fit my Redhawk? Preferably Canadian, but I will take what I can get.

2) I have a set of Hogue monogrips for it and they are decent, but not quite right for my hands. Can I dremel them with a sanding drum to alter the shape to fit me better? I would like to raise the lump directly behind the trigger guard a bit and remove the finger grooves if I can without destroying the grips.

Thanks,
Mark

I take it you have a newer Redhawk?

No, you cannot modify the Hogue grips... those huge beefy grips are hard plastic coated in a soft rubber. You'll end up turning them into garbage if you try to shape them with a dremel.

I just installed some nice ebony grips on my Redhawk.
The grips are from Eagle in the US.

I can take pics and post tomorrow.
They are small, and feel really, really good; they are similar in shape to what the old Redhawk grips were like.

My only complaint was that they are so smooth, but, I put a strip of grip tape on the front strap and back strap and now all is well.

I will post pics :)

Don't get me wrong, I love the monogrip look, but they feel like crap compared to a more traditional, smaller wood grip. It's like gripping a brick with a trigger.

*Oh, you'll also need to buy new "grip panel locator" (http://w ww.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=8352) in order to fit 99% of the grips out there for the Redhawk other than the Hogue.

It is a blued/wood grip one. Bought it NIB from an older gentlemen who bought it a couple of years ago and never used it.

Thanks for the warning on the grips, I would have tried it without someone stopping me.

I generally like the feel of the Hogue's, but probably want a grip in between the stock grips and the Hogue's. My problem with the stock grips is the big gap between the grip and the rear of the trigger guard, my problem with the Hogue's is that they completely fill in that gap. I need something in between to fit my hands well. If I could remove some of that material behind the trigger guard and smooth out the grooves on the Hogue's they would be great for me.

Is the grip panel locator part #40 in that schematic? I have one with my stock wood grips, do I need another one?

Yes, part#40. The new Hogue grips have a large button, wheras the older part is a small button. I think you are ok though.

That is your gun then and you have those grips as well?

Hmmm... I've seen what you are wanting, but don't know the make.
I did buy a set of Pachmyer grips that I don't like (going to post in EE soon) :)
You might like them... I'll post pics of my gun with all grips tomorrow.

Yes, it came with the wood grips and I got the Hogues off of a forum member. The Hogues are closer to what I want, but not quite it.

Does anybody make a grip blank kit that lets you carve what you want from a rough blank? I would be fine with carving and finishing them, but I woudl like someone to use a machine for the fitting to the grip straps and around the trigger guard area.

Look forward to seeing the Pachmyer's, they may be the answer.

Why not buy a set of Hogue wood grips and modify them. You can get something fairly close then whittle away as much as you need.

Haven't seen them yet. I will see if they will work, I am certainly OK with modifying and refinishing an existing set of grips.

You can try the Hogue Boot Grips for the Redhawk. I had the same issues and found the Boot Grips to be just right.

I will check these out as well.

Thanks,
Mark
