So lately I am obsessing over a light short rifle. My wish list is
260 or 7-08
5.75lb - 6.25lb
16"-18" barrel
bolt action
does not need sights
Detachable box mag
prefer synthetic and stainless
can be used
under $800.00
What is available does anyone have suggestions

Under $800?

used Ruger Compact (is that what its called?).

For even less with the exact features you mention - Savage 16, cut off 4-6" as required, re-crown, done!

Savages are already light out of the box with a 22" barrel. Cutting and crowing is not expensive.

I think kayaker1 has it right. Everything on your list says Savage except the barrel length and possibly the calibre. If you cut one down you can only go to an 18" barrel, anything shorter is a no-no according to the Lib powers that be. If you re-barrel, it can be any length you like.

remington model 7 could be a choice also, but it does not have a detach mag. Some of the older ones have a 181/2 barrel an weigh around the 6-61/2 lbs. Or you can look at some light weight stocks for what you have now and a light weigth scope. This would drop the weight of the gun. Light weight stocks are pricey though.

I thought I might be missing something but you guys are seeing the same thing I found and yes Ruger does have the compact and it was the one I was going to get but it does not have have a detach mag.
The Savage 11FCNS cut down to 18" might be the way to go, I really wanted the 260 but may have to settle for the7-08 (not a bad comprimise).

...and if you decide that the barrel is too short or still really want a .260 down the line the Savage will be joy to rebarrel!

I bought mine for 600 or 650.. I can't remember and it came with a bausch and lomb 3000 elite in 2-7 x 33mm..

beautiful bright little scope. I really like it.

The gun was used, but not as much as it is now.
