Well as the ol'man ages (DAD) his eyesight is not what it used to be, so he picked up a new berretta with a speed bead. So we went out today to a local farmers place and hammerd some pigeons. Man am I impressed with this gun we were using lite loads but you could feel the kick-off system actually cycle very smooth, and he likes the burris speed bead. After I let him play with his new toy I had to giver a whirl, As the birds circled I picked one put the dot on it and game over. and if you shut it off you can shoot useing the vent rib like nothing has changed, pretty cool. Any one else use the speed bead and / or anything we should watch for on breakin in the berretta?

Everyone says cycle some heavier 3" loads through it before it cycles light loads, but by the sounds of it your fathers gun is fine right out of the box?

How much was the burris speed bead? and I notice it installs by shimming the stock so is it only 1 neutral stock shim or does it have different cast/camber shims?

I want to get one of these for my Beretta as well, looked at them when they came out, and at the sportsman show the first year, I really liked the way it was mounted, seemed solid, and something that would work very well....

Yours is the first post I have read, where someone has actually used it, and given the fact you are impressed by it, just might make me go out and get it soon.....

What did it cost you ?

Here at one of the stores it's a special order and it's 326.00 CDN plus tax

it seems to have gone up in price, if I am not mistaken, from when it first came out.....

I would love to try one of these speed beads out. They get rave reviews on any site that sells them. Although... I usually check out what Chuck Hawks has to say about an item on his website for his opinion.

I can also see the counterpoint to Chuck's argument. If you are a casual bird hunter that only gets out a couple of times a year, and doesn't have hundreds of hours to spend at the range shooting clays, this could be a very useful tool for your "social" hunting.

Lots of folks want to hunt, but not invest the excessive time into it to become an expert. Shotgunning has a far steeper learning curve than taking an occasional deer or small game at close range. We can teach someone how to proficiently kill a standing deer under 100yards in a couple of hours to days. This seems to be a reasonable equalizer for some folks looking to hunt once in a while with their more experienced buddies.

Of course his point that is may degrade your overall skill is probably valid, but if you are a casual shooter, you are not out looking to make the tough shots every day anyways...

But how is a red dot gonna help with estimating lead on a bird? Or teach you to follow through? Or to focus at the target only? Of course this is only shooting, they will also not show you how to read birds, scout etc.

I would say this is better for more experienced shooter than a novice.
