Did they make the No 4 Mk 1 in a Jungle Carbine format? I just picked one up that looks like a Jungle Carbine but with a 26" barrel, cone type flash hidder, similar stock set up etc. It has the brass butt plate not the rubber JC one. I'll post pics in abit.

No they didn't. Several companies in the US made "Jungle Carbine" conversions of No4's, as well there are aftermarket parts and stock sets to turn bubba'd No4's into No5 lookalikes.

I didn't think so but I thought I'd check. What ever was done to it isn't new, looks like its been like that for a long time so I don't think it is a parts kit. Probably a company afte the war doing a conversion then.

It might be possible that you have a No4 rebarreled with a No5 barrel. Check for lightening cuts on the barrel. It could also have a No5 forestock and handguard. Pics could help ID that, or check for markings etc. It might be worth more as a parts gun for someone wanting to restore a No5.

It isn't a short JC barrel, it is a longer one and the front site guards aren't No 5 guards. Now that I look at it more, if you removed the flash suppressor and replaced the stock with a full stock it would be a complete No 4 mk 1...not a Mk 1*

Maybe I have a rare trials production jungle carbine :)

C1960 a US co called Sante Fe and Golden State Arms made faux "jungle rifles" by shortening the No4 stock and adding a FH. The FH lacked a bayonet lug and was retained by a set screw IIRC. Strictly a commercial conversion.

A well known store in Edmonton was selling one of these for $500 claiming that it was a rare prototype...

It does sound like one of those commercial clamp-on type flash hiders for sure.

Going back to n old post by Peter Laidler, some No4's were converted to No5's by armourers in Malaya.

Now I did have one of those odd No4's with a muzzle brake and it came from Milarm. Had to be an aftermarket thing.

Closer to home ...

I recall SIR in Wpg had converted No.4 in their catalogue not that long ago. The back end was all infantry rifle, from the handguard ring forward was modified with short wood and a cone flash hider for the barrel.
