Anybody have one or shoot one?

Thinking about buying one, but I don't know much about them....even the world wide web didn't have much.

Thanks for any info!

H&k 940

Gerich, I sent you a PM,

I have one, and I have shot it a couple of times with decent results. It is a beautifully crafted piece, and what made me buy it was the technical aspects of its design and operating system.

It's mechanism is a roller delayed blowback action, which differs in significant ways from the typical gas operated semi's typically encountered for centrefire rifles. It is the same action as employed on the G3 series of battle rifles.

The mechanics are a bit technical, but once you've wrapped your head around the principle, you will see that it is a very robust design that can handle just about any type of ammo you try to feed it.

The main pitfall that I see with the action is that the fluted chamber really chews up brass, so reloading the empties is a bit of an issue, to the point where I would be hesitant to use the once fired brass I pick up that was fired in it. The upside is that you dont have guys at the range scooping your brass!

FYI... here is a link to the manual for this series of guns, its a pretty big PDF (3.5 Mb) that hasn't crashed my computer, not my site so cant guarantee it wont crash yours.

BTW, check out HKPro.com it has some pretty good info in the forums section.

The action is almost identical to the G3/HK91 but in a sporter configuration. Extremly reliable and durable. An odd feeling recoil compared to most other guns.

And just like the HK91, chews the c**p out of brass.

I had a factory HK custom left handed 770 (308 version of the 940)with all the fancy HK scope mounts etc... Shot great (moa) till one day the bullets all started keyholing. Sent it back several times but they never could correct it. To this day we don't know what changed in the rifle. Ended up with a $2800 crow bar.

What weight bullets were you shooting? Seems odd for it to go to pot like that. Keyholing usually shows a bullet stability issue - not spinning fast enough.

Was 21 years ago so I can't say for sure but I usually use 150-165gr. in a .308 for deer.

As I recall, (it has also been 20+ years) the rifles used polygonal rifling. I wonder if it was some type of "deposit" left in the barrel by one brand of bullet that caused the subsequent bullets to "slip" in the rifling.

Or maybe the keyhole bullets were thin skinned, and not engaging the rifling? Just a couple of guesses.
