Gun Club Qualifications?

I was at my club today. We pay $80.00 per year for an indoor/heated pistol and .223 and 7.62x39 range (with 100 meters) and we can go outside to a 300 meter range. Its open 24/7. To be a member you only need a PAL. There are about 280 members. You can be a member for the outdoor range (carabines) for only $25.00 per year. They keep the cost low cause they got a s**t load of members.

Great place with awsome people.

Rupert, From the way you describe the restrictive requirements it certainly sounds like the Aurora Gun Club.

Some years ago I was invited there to view their facilities & meet some of their directors. I am an experienced handgunner, qualified range officer & ex LEO. When I was informed of the qualifications required I told the fat overbearing prick to stick it where sun never shines.

There are far better clubs in the area, you don't need to put up with that kind of crap. Clubs should encourage people to join, not put barriers in the way that deter membership.

Lol... I filled out forms for the club and my membership came in the mail w/a print-out of the rules. It's an outdoor range. I can go there and shoot whatever I want really. I think the sun has to be out. I think it's $85 a year. When there's other people there (I often get the place to myself) they are generally quite nice and I've got to shoot a lot of their guns :) .

That pretty much sounds like the range I go to in Selkirk, MB. If you want to be part of the Handgun Club, costs only $95 a year, and you send your application in through mail. For just the normal rifle (overflow) range, it costs $50 and you are considered a member the moment you put your application through the slot in the range shack! That's a pretty sweet deal.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

I'm approaching the end of my probationary period at a "nameless" gun club. To qualify for membership one has to hit a standard sized target at 25 meters 20 times out of 20 (consecutively) with a .22cal pistol. I accomplished this.

So once I pay the one time membership fee to go along with the yearly fee I can become a full member. However, if one wants to shoot any other caliber (not on the probationary shooting night) then you must do the same qualification test but with the caliber you want... so 9mm/.40/.45 @ 25 meters 20 out of 20. This seems quite difficult for me and for someone like my younger sister who wants to also join a club, impossible. I'm no pistol marksman and neither is my sister, we just want to shoot for fun and sport.

So, my question to you guys is what kind of qualifications (after the mandatory club safety course) did you have to do to be able to shoot the calibers of your choice freely throughout the week?

Sounds like they don't want new shooters.

It sounds to me like they don't want holes in their floor and ceiling. It also sounds to me like they don't want to risk the loss of their range approval because of any holes in their floor and ceiling.

Bite the bullet, probie.

Practice, practice, practice, and pass their test.

The ceiling is 6'1 (quite low) and full of dings and dents, in fact the roof is old and slowly caving in and needs to be replaced this summer. I can shoot down range without hitting the ceiling or floor though!;) My sister can as well but cannot hit the target that far away or that accurately.

Only quilifying i've heard of is the saftey aspects of that particular club. I wouldnt go to ANY club where you have to take an accuracy test, thats bull####!

My club has an indoor range and outdoor ranges. $80 for the outdoor and includes shotgun range, centerfire rifle range, rimfire range, bow range. $40 to join the pistol club and I get to use the indoor and outdoor pistol range. The club is also building a new indoor range at the outdoor location that will allow use to use FMJ and JHP ammo in calibers up to and including 50cal or so I have been told. I didn't need to qualify, you're supposed to get good by attending the range, why should one have to be good to join?!

You are getting taken advantage of or you have approached the wrong club for membership.

You guys make me feel like I'm getting hustled!:p The club wants $355ish yearly and a $350 one time fee and I still can only shoot a .22.

.

Oh you are so wrong it is not even funny.

You indicate that you FEEL like you are gettiung hustled.

You should not FEEL that way at all.

Instead at this point you should KNOW that you are getting hustled.

Hope this change in information helps.

incidently at my club you need 1o out of 10 on a target a 10 yards........you can pick your caliber of choice. Once that is done you are good to go.

Well then you can cross most Ontario clubs off your list then.

As far as I know all have some sort of accuracy test of some sort.

The OPs however is far above the norm.

I must add however that I find it funny that the same guy who was all upset about "bump firing" is likewise upset about accuracy tests...................very funny indeed.

Take the advice of everyone here. Cut your losses and run to a club that is not run under dark age cave man rules and run by a bunch of fudds who have no idea how to move this sport as opposed to running it in a box with rules and fees that turn new shooters away. You should post the name of this club so we can advise shooters to steer clear of it.

im talking the accuracy tests he has to go through. i know some clubs have them and its to make sure u can put rnds down range and are competant to handle a gun.

i dont understand how u can compare bump firing to this.... i was talking about saftey concerns of bump firing in the other thread, this is about passing an accuracy test to gain membership at a club. totally off with that one.

6'1, Holy cow! I couldn't even stand up in there. What do tall people do, kneel? Sit on chairs? :runaway:

What club is this? what city/province if you don't mind me asking? I plan on joining a club in waterloo Ontario next week, its an indoor range, you can shoot rifles, shotguns, pistols whatever, its open 24/7 (electronic key access), and you can shoot whatever you want as long as you clean up after yourself, like tv's car doors, pots whatever... its just under $300/yr. You have to take a club safety course and pass a written and practical test, then the probation period is 9hrs of range time during regular hours (9am-6pm mon-fri i believe) that has to be split between a min of 3 days, then you get your key for 24/7 access. It has about 8 bays I believe.

I haven't joined yet, so some of this information may be a bit off, but im super excited, seems like a good deal to me! I have already taken and passed the club safety course, just waiting for my rpal to come in the mail next week.

Every day and in every way, I'm gladder and gladder I don't live in Ontario.

Can you use a shotgun with buckshot?:D

My first club had a 'safety course' you need to take if you wanted ATT at the end we had to put 10rounds into a giant target at 20y. everyone passed within half an hour with me being the first :) no probation period tho.

The club I'm at now has no such BS rules either, and I didn't even have to take the safety course because I already had an ATT.
