I have a 30-06 that came with a Simmons scope that is now mounted on my 22 . I hunt large game moose , black bear , caribou . Range is between 50-300 yards in wet and cold conditions . I really can't afford more than $150 , what would be the best scope to purchase ????

Having been through this, my best suggestion would be try and save a little more and get some good quality glass that will last for the rest of your life.

I get antsy to buy new things as well, but waiting until you can afford something in the 200-300 price range will be worth it. I would suggest something from the Bushnell Elite line up but that's just me.

After all, hunting season is still more than 5 months away.

Just my two cents. Good luck!

I agree with whats been said but I would say either take:

Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 Multi-X reticle ($175-$225)

Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 Mildot reticle with quick adjustment knobs ($210-$280)

If it was a manufactured in Japan simmons w/ the aspherical camera lens the edge to edge optic quality is better than the elites, considered one of the $400-500 range scopes buys.

I think all the Bushnell fanboys would be little disappointed to find out their scopes aren't as waterproof as Bushnell claims. Two B.scopes were left submerged in the sink overnight and both of them leaked, same scopes failed the overnight freezer fog test (nitrogen had leaked out) weren't even fogproof (bushnell scopes come with cheap seals).

Enough said.
Also Bushnells warrenty repair's service is a joke! I am still waiting for my scope to get back from last October.

BTW

I've owned 5 bushnells.

Only one out of the 5 did not develop a problem.

And NO they were not abused.

Don't bother reading or quoting an article, if you own a bushnell simply perform the sink and freezer test for yourselves (the canadian warranty depot for bushnell is located in Richmond Hill, Ontario.)

On a budget I'd get a Bushnell 3-9x40 3200 series
or a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40
or a used Leupold VXII 3-9x40.

I have all three of these and they are good for general purpose hunting.

I don't ever think of taking my scopes for a swim. FS

We;ll if you want a new one the Bushnell Trophy in a 3-9 will fill your bill. I think you can get them for around $129.00. FS

I chose Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 with BDC as a budget scope and it's been good to me :)
Optics are very clear and let lots of light in, reticle is same as Leupold - goes black or golden. Solid no-thrills scope.

I was in the same boat as you. Everyone told me that without a 500+$ scope, I wasn't going to hit the broadside of a barn...

I went and got a nikon prostaff 3-9x40 for 179$ (this was last year). Awesome glass. Does the job and does it well so far. It got majorly banged up while going through the woods, but it still functions well.

1 moose down and hopefully, many more to come!

I read once that most scopes are made by a handful of companies and the quality is made to spec. Hence a cheap scope may actually be made in the same factory that makes the optics for a high end brand.

Bushnell owns tasco, simmons and millet so either way there all bushnells

None of this means they are all of equal quality, which they are not. I would not impute any assurance of quality from a low end product, just because it comes out of the same factory as a high end one. I'd imagine one of the reasons for having various lines from a factory (aside from increasing market share by having more brands) is to distinguish between the quality of them at various price points.
