Jamie, when did Orono get approved for action shooting?
Just a question as I know we are approved for PPC, but was not sure of action shooting as Cowboy, IPSC or IDPA.
Thanks
Good to hear from you Jason, thought you dropped off the planet. I have been trying to get in touch with you regarding your rifle course.
Contrary to the name, Cowboy Action Shooting it is not "Action" like you are thinking. It is Akin to PPC, and for on a range with one backstop and no sideberms, so no IPSC approval is needed. I already have the CFO approved cowboy target/stage layout for a range with one backstop such as ours. In Cowboy, no one is allowed to move with a loaded gun (hammer must always be down on an empty chamber), unlike IPSC.
IDPA is also the same way, in some respects, but can be practiced as you know we do at Orono, without running around and jumping all over the place. In Cowboy a firearm is never holstered with a round in the chamber, ever. In Cowboy shooting, once a round is in the chamber, feet do not move. Cowboy matches are generally considered the safest since there is so many checks and balances on safety. All SASS matches start with a mandatory safety meeting. There is a minimum of 6 people always watching for the actions and activities of one shooter. 1) Loading supervisor, 2) Range Officer (with the timer always with the shooter), 3) 3 spotters, 4) Unloading supervisor. There is one firing line, no advancing like in IPSC, IDPA and PPC. It's pretty much like bullseye shooting (with really big bullseyes) with three types of guns and some nifty targets.
No popcorn eating required waiting for an argument Steve. If you want, I could probably come by the Marksmen club for a match one day as well if some of your guys are interested there.
Feel free to PM me Jason or Steve if you have any questions.
