I have some FMJ ammo but i read that i should stock up on some soft point ammo for defensive reasons. I hear problems with ak's not feeding SP ammo well. Have any of you had issues with SP ammo feeding into a Vz58 or does it feed it fine?

I've shot SP's through my CZ-58 and SKS and they worked fine, no jams or problems. The sights might be a bit off as SP's tend to drop faster. I prefer FMJ's and they tend to do sufficient damage for most applications, the only reason I would go SP's for defense is to prevent over-penetration.

Never had a problem with SP ammo.

If you do run some of the new production SP ammo its not a bad idea to hold onto the brass as well should you ever want to work up some hunting loads.

I tried using some of the S&B soft point ammo in my CZ-858-4v, just to see what it was like vs. the military stuff.

Generally it works fine, but I did have a few were the nose gets stuck on the ramp on the way in - which can be rectified by giving the charging handle a "forward assist" bump.

For any defensive purpose, I would be hesitant to use soft point ammo in this rifle for this reason.

Conversely, in about 4,000 rounds of the surplus stuff, I have only had a few malfunctions (around 5-8), all or most of which are a variation on: (1) the round is fired; the extractor can't pull the casing out, and it actually rips a chunk of the rim off; attempting to close the action and extract the round doesn't work, neither does trying to pry it out from the back with a tool; locking the action open and tapping the casing out from the front with a cleaning rod does work very easily though.

I think it is an over-expanded casing issue, that happens about once every 500-1,000 rounds. I would not want this to happen if I was defending the Czech Motherland from invading hordes from West Germany (or whatever). You would be in some difficultly until you could find a cleaning rod or something long enough to tap the round out from the front.

I think this issue is more prevelant with battle pack ammo (in plastic shrink wrap) than the regular wooden crate/sardine tin ammo. That stuff in the battle packs seems to have more umph to it.... and more muzzle flash.

Since you're in the states I would look at the new steel-cased Hornady VMAX or Cor Bon DPX ammo for self defence purposes.

But still for home protection nothing is better than a 2 & 3/4" 12 gauge with trap load's. Due to the fact any handgun or rifle round will go through multiple wall's as the 12 gauge will not but it is still strong enough to take down an intruder. Leard this on Wensday Night @ The Range on the Dish Network's Outdoor Channel & was a big eye opener.

Trap loads for defence is a TERRIBLE idea! You want to stop an attacker, not just maim him, and that requires penetration to vital organs, which trap/birdshot will NOT do reliably. Any ammo that will penetrate enough to do so will also go through wallboard.

Take a look at this, it may change your mind: http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=176

Close range shot with a trap load IS deadly.

At any range I would be shooting inside my house I would feel comfortable using a trap load. If I was worried about lack of penetration I would step up to BB or BBB

It looks like a "clean me every 1000 rounds" issue than any other reason.
They clean horses don't they? why not clean your rifle, too?
PP. ;)

No the rifle is fine. I was actually trying to make the point that, in my view, it is a very reliable rifle when using the FMJ Czech surplus. I know that my girlfriend has had 2-3 of those "break part of the rim off the casing" malfunctions, and I think I have 1 or 2 (I cleared all the malfunctions) but that is in about four crates (1120 rounds x 4) plus a couple of those shrink wrapped "battle packs" from Lever (300 rounds x 2), plus various other soft point rounds and whatnot. One malfunction or so per 1000 rounds seems pretty good to me.

It is a good rifle. Cleaning... I've always cleaned mine very meticulously after each trip to the range. I have yet to see any visible evidence of the effect of corrosive ammo, but that is what I am trying to avoid. My AR, my Swiss, my 9mm AR, sometimes go a month or more without being cleaned, but the ones that shoot military surplus (858 and K98k's) get cleaned to the bone every time. Usually the 858-4v shoots about 80-120 rounds per weekend, and is always thoroughly cleaned.

The malfunction I have described... it will rip an extractor sized chunk right out the rip of the casing trying to pull it out. While I don't rule it out, that would have to be one seriously gummed up chamber to hold it in there like that when the extractor is pulling that hard on it.

My own theory is that it has something to do with the ammo/casings that came in one of more of those "battle packs" - the ones where each package is a folded piece of paper with one 10-round stripper clip, sealed in a clear plastic bag, and then the whole pack of 300 is sealed in shrink wrap. That ammo is different from the "crate" ammo. The casings are a lighter colour of gray, and they have more umphff to them, and more muzzle flash.

I have had something similar with surplus 8mm ammo in K98k's - where the casings crack at the mouth and get stuck in there pretty good. The difference with the k98k action though is, if you want that casing out of there, it will come out if you use enough force. With a semi-auto action, I am more inclined to just tap it out from the front if I know the bullet is gone.

Anyways, cleaning is good. I take your points. I am a big gun cleaner myself.

Here are some pics and vids of my gun. It is all the same gun. It used to be a folder, now it is a woody.
