Need 1911 Advice

Hey guys,

I'm not tryin' to stir up a hornets nest here, but I need some advice from those in the know.

I'm looking to pick myself up a 1911 pistol, and as the saying goes, I'm spoiled for choice. It seems every man and his dog is producing a 1911 variant these days, and I'm hoping for a little perspective.

Some people say that STI is the way to go.

Others swear by Kimber.

Still others say that anything other than Colt is a form of blasphemy.

Without this turning into a bashfest, can anyone help me decide who I should go with?

Also, I'm 95% sold on going .45, unless someone can make a particularly compelling 9mm argument.

I can tell you from experience that the colts work extremly well.
Stay away from Para ordnance (mag problems, not up to par with machining either)
STI is expensive but is top quality.
If I were to buy another 1911 I would take a very close look at Springfield loaded series.

Stick with the 45 ACP.
 
I am going to recommend a Norinco. Once you look past the "Made In China" stamp, they are decent guns and are great for a range plinker. $350 plus $120 or so of tuning and you have a very nice shooter. ARMCO (link above) sells pre tuned Norinco 1911A1's for about $450. Which is a great deal. Buy a tuned Norc for $450, and a case of ammo for another $300 and you have still spent less then on a Kimber or Colt alone.

Another plus to the Norc is because they are so cheap, you can really experiment or practise refinishing, and home tunig without worry of screwing up a $1200 gun. Also, when you want a little more performance out of it, the frame and slide are made up of very nice steel. So they are perfect for custom work.
 
Don't overlook one of these.

about the same price as the spartan but you get a forged frame, slide and barrel! and it comes in stainless. ;)

I don't think there is a "best". Most quality 1911s will never cause you a problem and will be a lot of fun to shoot. Having said that, I love my kimber custom II, and for the money it is a steal.
 
The OP should mention his purpose (use of the pistol---IPSC/IDPA competition or plinking or bullseye) and his budget (350-2500 or more).

Without these two very important parameters, there is no real basis for a recommendation.

Well i have a Para P-13 45cal that run as smooth as your colt. Never had any trouble with it or the mags
 
Purpose is range, plinking, and the upcoming fall of civilization (lol). And I'm looking at getting into IPSC, eventually. Gotta get the skills up to par first.

I'm not really looking to spend more than about $1500, tops.

If I were you, I'd get two Armco tuned Norincos, preferably with the beavertail and Novak style sights. Then I'd have leftover cash to buy a Lee Classic Cast Turret Press with everything to load .45 acp and enough components to load 1000 rounds.

IMO, that is the best utilization of your 1500 bucks. Then if the SHTF, you can have a 1911 in each hand.

OP, it looks like you are going to shoot your future .45 pistol regularly and not keep in the safe. If thats the case, my choices would be either STI (Trojan) or Kimber (any of the Custom II series). Have got a few .45's which all get shot consistently.
YOu could get a Norc, but they are a bit rough "out of the box". Nothing a few hundred/thousand rounds would soften up plus some minor smith work.
If your aim is to shoot 7-15 mtrs. the Norc will perform well, but anything over the max distance, other makes are certainly better "out of the box".
As I mentioned in other posts, the Kimber, IMO, has the best trigger action "out of the box".
Now to the meat of your thread - is there an argument for you to shoot other calibers other than .45? Ya picked the right one! You will not regret mastering the 1911. Do post a pic of your eventual purchase and give us your range impressions. Good luck shopping and Happy shooting!!!!!:D

Never said they hadn't. I just don't think there's really an argument for a particular product cause one person had a good one. Now had you said that you've owned and used numerous Para's in the past few years there would be some weight to the argument.

Get a 1911 Norinco ! or three if you really want to spend 1500 bucks :p

Sure you can spend more money on a Pistol but you won't get more pistol for your money :cool:
