I have used the A-Zoom brand ones and the extractor on my SKS damages the rims instantly. I'm trying to train my girlfriend on the rifle, but can't use these because the metal is too soft. Anyone know where to buy stronger ones?

i use an SKS for a trainer, it gets LOTS of dummy rounds thru it. The A-zooms Dont last at all, ive found the best are to reload steel cases from the surplus with FMJ pointed bullets. I also fill the cases with my old tumbling media to stop the bullet from compressing. The SKSs are hard on training ammo, But this works well.

Wish I read this post 10 minutes ago! I just bought some A-Zoom snap caps off ebay!

If I have no reloading equipment or tools, what are my options for making my own dummy round?

I don't know about the 7.62x39 ones, but I do know A-Zooms sucked bad in my Win 94 30/30 as the soft metal on the rim fell apart after only a few uses, and allowed the snap cap to slip past the cartridge stop and under the cartridge lifter which jammed my rifle up tighter then Wendy Culkiers cornhole at a gunshow.

Fortunately this happened in front of my gunsmith who took the rifle apart cleared the jam and reassembled it, I left the A-zooms in his garbage can.

For my SKS and other rifles I made dummy rounds from spent cases, drilled a hole in the side of the brass etc. I'm sure there is lot's on line about making dummy/practice rounds.

Now might be the time for you to get a small lee re loader start up set, and some dies. :D

i have a-zooms for every calibre i own, including 7.62x39.

the only problem that i have ever had was the .22lr rounds get flattened rims from the firing pin and i have to file them down a bit.

I don't have any reloading gear either. I think someone could make some cash on the EE with this...

If I had a berdan deprimer, I'd be all over that. Any easy way to get the berdan primer out? I can't see fired steel cases feeding well, and I'm not gonna trash my sizing die with the steel cases. I tried using a piece of metal to poke the primer out, but anything I could find and file to be small enough to fit the holes, was too weak and bent when I tried to push them out. I've heard of using water pressure, case full of water and push the bullet in, but never tried that, as it sounds messier than I want for my loading area.

Look at the 2nd post, if your primers don't stab that easily use the first posts ideas.

You are not supose to fire on those dummy rimfire caps! They are for feeding & ejecting only.

i have done it hundreds of times and not damaged my firing pin yet.

considering i can replace it with an aftermarket for $30, id say its hardly the end of the world if it ever did.

No arguments there, I was just reading the instructions. The damage from dry firing a rimfire is the firing pin & also the chamber peening where the 2 contact, if you dont use something to protect them. I think the instructtions are to prolong the dummy rounds lifespan...

Man, I must have got the last good set of caps that azoom ever made, or maybe the only ones. I've put mine through both my 858 and SKS literally hundreds and hundreds of times and asides from the anodizing getting progressively scratched off they're fine.
