Heatshields...

Alright gentlemen, be nice please =)
I have a few simple questions that need not be answered by some angered troll.
Only constructive comments (whether positive or negative) need be posted here...

The terms:
- No, this is not a quest for a useless tacticool accessory w/no other purpose than mere looks...
- No, this is not something I saw on someone else's gauge & just had to have on one of mine...
- Yes, I have actually burnt my fingers on the barrel more than once by putting "that many rounds downrange in such a quick succession"...

The question(s): Aftermarket heatshields...
- Does anyone "sport" em?
- Any feedback on their performance (or lack thereof) for their intended purpose: keeping your digits cool?
- If anyone's tried one, what are your thoughts on the quality/sturdiness/ease of mounting?
- Any recommendations on model/make?
- Any tweeks to be made to make em more resilient to recoil (2 3/4 slug & buck only... No birdshot for this boy)?

The Gauge: Remmy 870 w/18.5 barrel...

I did an extensive amount of online research on the topic & the critics seem to be quite divided on the matter.
Some positively hate em, others adore em...
I am aware of the "barrel scratch/prone to rusting issues" that are often mentioned.
My shotties are beasts of burden though. No safe queens for the GhOsT.
I beat em around & bang em off trees. They bear "scars" from countless tac-loads through the ejection port & loosened up clamps sliding down the barrel.
I use these guns for what they were designed to do: making big noise & bigger holes.
So, I really don't worry about my less-than prisitine finish & could live perfectly well w/another additional scratch, or two...

My last 12 gauge "run & gun" resulted in a rather unpleasant burn. Something I'd rather not duplicate any time soon.
So I decided to investigate the heatshield option.
The CGN search function has assured me (Ha!) that no such thread is to be found in the forums.
Hence I ask the experts for assistance.

What do you boys think?
Worthy of a try or a complete & utter waste of time/money?

Thanks for the input!

i have heat shields on all three of my shotguns, i like them though they do make a bead sight harder to use, fine if you've got ghost rings. as for burning hands i wear gloves...

unless you like the look of it, just wear some good gloves, (not winter ones (duh)). thats just my opinion, I just wear some gloves when i shoot and touching the barrel does nothing burn wise. ( i also do rapid fire occasionally with my shotty :p). But its not like having a heat shield could ruin your shotgun, its just gonna cost that hard earned green. for me its function vs looks and function. I dont care so much about how it looks, just how it functions, so the gloves are my choice for that solution.

That's a solid copy on the gloves!
Rarely ever shoot without em on.
Nor did I ever think a barrel could get hot enough to burn thru em, but it was either holding on for dear life or dumping the gauge in about two feet of snow.
Chose to sacrifice a lil skin =)

Rollie, what kinda of shield do you have mounted?
ATI, Mossy, or another make?

Thanks for the feedback guys!

two mossberg 590's with factory mossberg shields, and one 500 persuader with a factory shield... i happen to like the look of the heat shields :). but dang do they mess up the bead sight :(.

and they will do you good if your not wearing gloves.

Factory huh?
Yeah, they're probably pretty solid then if they came pre-installed.

I hear you on the whole bead sight acquiry also.
Luckily mine is slightly raised up off the barrel, but the ghost rings sights make it obsolete anyway =)

Wondering how an ATI would hold up to the type of abuse I subject my gauge to...

I must admit that there is something "guttural" looking about a heatshielded gauge for sure =)
But if the aftermarket shields are crap, then there'd be something less than "optimal" looking about a heatshielded gauge suddenly dispensing it's shield in the middle of a fire application =)

Thanks for the info!

I don't really care for them but I do put one on before a 3 Gun or a course. It comes off again as soon as I'm done.

well factory is nice and solid, but easily adjustable. the persuader i bought the moss heat shield for off the EE, and fitted it with no troubles. as for after market i couldnt help you there.
i still use the bead sight, as i dont care much for ghost rings.

try an aftermarket, their fairly cheap, probibly work just fine.

I use my 870 just like you ghostwalkah.Same iron but a 20" barrel.
I call it the ThingBlaster :D
I picked up an ATI(I think) heatshield on the EE for $25 complete with sights. The install was simple and so far it has held up pretty well.
It functions as a heat shield, looks alright and I needed the sights.
I have a Remington LEO top folder on and needed to get my face up a little and away from the metal stock. The sights did that for me.
The ThingBlaster is no beauty queen, she's a tuff ol cob of a camp gun with pitting and almost no finish left, but she does the job I gave her like a champ.
I'd say if you can find a cheap one go for it.I couldn't be bothered to glove up any time I might haveta burn some powder...

Things are complicated enough, see?

Rather than constantly changing the things about GunNutz that we do know and understand - change just for the sake of change, it would seem - we really need to better educate Nutz on how to use the search function. Seriously...

Rockeye: Good to know there's hope for the ATI! I think I'll give a it a shot. I heard the key to installation lies in taking the barrel off (I guess some people just can't be bothered...) & dabbing a few quick drops of LockTite on the screws/switching out the screws for shorter ones.

Lucky: Gotta keep up with the times baby =) HeHeHe I've been slinging that term around for yrs now, you're late! Don't make break out the real slang =)

Wendell: Thanks for the info! Point well taken...
But, I'd rather spend more time behind a trigger than behind a screen mastering the intricate science of "interwebbing", neh.
However, if there is such a thing as the "magic touch" when it comes to the search function (which you obvioulsy seem to possess), please enlighten me.
Knowledge is power. I guess...

To all who've taken the time to help me out, I thank you.
And so do my blistered fingers!

Worked...
But the wealth of knowledge & information in those posts was a lil too much for me to digest =)
If I were to base my decision on that content, I'd be as informed as I was before I chose to start this thread.

And what of your personal experience Wendell?
You seemed to approve of heatshields in that thread. Do you use one? If so, what kind?

That link worked about as well as my own attempts with the search function...

I don't like the look of heatshields, so, for the most part, I don't use them. I think that shooting with warrior gloves (on a civilian range) defines Tacti-cool and looks even more ### than a bayonet on a handgun, so, for the most part, I don't use them (unless the ambient temperature is below zero). When I shoot a long course I try to remember to not touch the barrel. (And sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.) And sometimes I get burned and sometimes I don't. If you want a heatshield, get a heatshield.

Heatshields and gloves have a purpose. So do scarves.

I don't wear scarves either.

P.S.: I'm sorry my link didn't work.

Let's try that again:

Uh, okay.

In my line of employment wearing gloves keeps my hands clean from some of the "garbage" I have to handle =)
Since I wear em while shooting at work, I keep the practice going when I shoot on my own time.

As for the ###ness factor on civi ranges, I avoid it by avoiding civi ranges...

Can't argue with you when it come to the pistol bayo though =)

The scarf keeps that yummy Afghan fecal matter-based dust outta my nostrils =) I've inhaled my fair share over the years to choose differently now.

Thanks for the corrected link, but it still isn't working for me though.
But I think I've pretty much gotten most of the info I was after.

awwh, but theyre so cute!

you can :nest: bad-guys and zombies with them :D

I've burnt myself on my guns a few times after shootin' quickly. I never burn myself with my M97A(1897 Trench gun copy) even if I grab the barrel due to the heatshield. It's great!

The trick to the CGN Search issue is the Search Options in the lower left corner. For some crazy reason they have the options defaulting to "1 week" and "and newer" so you only get the most recent stuff.

If you leave the "one week" but select "and older" you'll get tons of whatever keywords you input that go back to when CGN started up.

I must admit to some occasional desire for a heat shield myself. The info about ruining the front bead sight view is a good one. It would seem that the cure is to mount a rear ghost ring sight and a clamp on front ring and sight that also acts as a mounting pad for the shield to attach. With a front and some sort of rear mount things should come out nice and solid. Of course lining it up the first time and adding some form of indexing mark would be quite important.
