What are you going to feed your Ruger #1 .303 British?

I'd use Canadian Classics like Dominion 215gr RNSP or CIL 180gr Kling-kor SP

Now there's a clever gunnut!

When I first started hunting, my first rifle was a Simpon-Sears 'sporterised' Lee Enfield and the C.I.L./Dominion 215gr was our go to medicine for Moose. All I could find in that weight was the Woodleigh version I picked up through Corlanes. The Hornady 174gr RN are decent performers as well.

Sorry for the newbie question but what makes a given load the most accurate? I sort of assumed, mistakenly perhaps, that it's all about tuning the bullet speed to suit the rifling within a certain range. Too slow and it'll track the rifling but fall to the ground too soon. But if overdriven to crazy high speeds will the bullets not "skid" on the rifling and not take hold as well? So is there not a happy range of velocities to work over? I'm also thinking that this will change between shooting hard cast rounds vs jacketed?

Enlightenment on this will be greatly appreciated.

Mostly, it's voodoo:)

Use straight ammo with a good bullet seated reasonably close to the lands and shoot it pretty close to maximum and mostly they will be accurate.:)

.303 bullet

I plan to use 175 Hornady Rn's or possibly Sierra's for hunting. Lkely 150gr. Hornady's for the range stuff. This rifle will be great for Island Blacktails and good "backup/carry around gun" for my mainland Elk/deerhunts.
Geoff in Victoria.

Hope noone minds a golden oldie thread.

I've been talking to LBT about a custom mould for my 303 when it is in. A 160 grain designed for economic shooting. A spitzer with a gas check. Originally planned a plain base but the gas check makes the bullets fit a larger range of velocities.

I also plan to try some Frontier plated hunting bullets in 174 grain and 235 grain if they are stocked by Marstar.

Keep yappin Spanky :)

just loaded some 150gr Sierra's over Varget and 180gr Sierra's over RL17. Started at book max loads for Enfield pressures (used 4350 data for Rl17). Once I get the 150 Sierra load down I will back off a couple grains and work with the 150gr TSX. Itchin' for this 303.......:ninja:

here's my 2010 hunting load

150gr Barnes TSX @ 3.14" OAL, over 44.5grs IMR8208xbr, W-W brass and WLR primer
2725 fps avg and groups about MOA for 2 shot pairs

here's how it flys

+1.5" @ 100
-1" @ 200
-11" @ 300

I have a vx3 3.5-10x with the Boone & Crockett reticle on the 303 for this fall. On 10x magnification and using the first line below the main crosshair it is bang on at 265 yards and the second line is on at 350. I wont shoot any further than that with this rifle on game

hopefully November has some nice weather days in store so I can see if this combo will knock down a nice buck ;)

150gr Sierra SP @ 3" OAL, 45.0 grs Varget, W-W brass & WLR primer
2640 fps avg

180gr Sierra SP @ 3.1" OAL, 47.0 grs RL17, W-W brass & WLR primer

I haven't pushed these loads past the starting load, will do after hunting season

one last load to share :

150gr Sierra SP over 10.0 grs IMR Trail Boss ~ 1200 fps avg

Well like the man said, I have not missed much.
My 9.3x74R #1 will do anything the 303 does and then some. When the hype is over I may get a #1 in 303 just to say I got one. Ha? They soon be on the second hand shelves.

There are lots of Ruger #1 chamberings that will do "anything the 303 does and then some".

You miss the whole point on this #1 303 thing .... It's a very limited run of rifles chambered in a cartridge that we hold dear here in Canada and was cooked up right here on CGN, besides the fact that AFAIK there hasn't been a new non-military production rifle in 303 produced in decades.

.

Just a safety note on scrounging brass at the range. Some rifles out there are a little stretched on the headspace and the brass you collect will reflect this. I have found some fired rounds that are partially separated on first firing.
