!#$@ there's a bulge in my barrel

Well, I went out and did some shooting at the range with my AR. Nothing spectacular, just a regular shoot. Got home and stripped it down and gave it a good clean, and then I took a look at the rifling, and !@#$^%$&$%^*%#@%#$%&#$#@#%@#$%*!@#$&^%#$^(!@#$&!#(^%&@$#^@#$!@#%$^%$^#$^$#%^@#$%^@#%&^@%!#^$@#*^&@#$, I have a bulge in my barrel. It's right near the end of the barrel, looks like about an inch away from the muzzle. I'm completely dumbfounded, this gun maybe has somewhere around 500 rounds through it total, and it's not exactly like I skimped out and got a POS barrel. The barrel is a Noveske, and it shoots like a lazer beam. What the hell?? :confused: Now what do I do with the barrel, it's not like I can just pick up another short Noveske barrel.

Looks like more of a indent to me.

A buldge is something you see from the outside.

Are you using a one piece coated rod or a segmented rod?
 
I have seen similar indents in two barrels that the brain trust of the local constabulary induced. Seems the where handloaders of a sort, (ie barely compentnent to load a cap gun) and they decided to down load 223 so they could shoot the department AR's on the indoor range they had. Built a load that not only wouldn't cycle the action, it didnt' always clear the barrel. Identical rings in each barrel, 2 in one, one in the other.

Could you have had a squib and not noticed?

Seeing as how the OP was using the rifle with said "bulge" I see no issue. A KB with factory ammo or even proper reloads will result in damage to the rifle with little to any damage to the shooter. Firearms are dangerous, you take your chances every time shoot.

can you say with 100% its safe to fire? In all my armorers training a bulge barrel is a unsafe barrel no ifs ands or buts.

Can you say with 100% certainty its unsafe? There are no guarantees, firearms are dangerous. I'd shoot the rifle without hesitation. If anything, the barrel may split or shear at or near the bulge. With a solid bolt and lockup there is no risk to the shooter with such a bulge. I would be more concerned with performance over safety.
