Plastic POS

haha what the hell? thats like saying
"i dont like the look of red cars, they shouldnt sell those stupid looking things."

While I can appreciate the weather resistant benefits of stainless steel metal work and synthetic stocks, it's not my choice. I do have one however, a Ruger 10/22 in that configuration but I much prefer shiny blued metal and nicely figured wood. In the years I've been hunting, rare are the ocassions where my firearms have been harshly subjected to the elements for any lengthy period of time, enough to notice any ill effects.

There was one rifle stock I had whos point of impact results did seem to be affected by moisture. A Parker Hale in 308 NM. On that, I stripped the finish, raised and sanded the grain down, and applied a penetrating sealer called Rez (I believe), cleaned up the checkering and used a finish coat of satin finish Vatathne. End of changing zero problem.

If I was a guide, or a LEO in the Florida Everglades, SS and synthetic would be a reasonable choice.

Ok, so I know I'm going to ruffle a lot of feathers but I feel as though I have to rant about this.

All the firearms I have are passed down to me from my grandfather. They all have nice walnut stocks on them and feel like a gun should.

I was in the local gun shop yesterday and decided to kill some time looking at new guns. I asked to see a tikka hunter but the guy only had a t3 lite in stock. He handed it to me and I thought he had handed me a kids BB gun. What the $%*@ is wrong with you people that like those POS "synthetic" stocks?

Synthetic is just a glorified term that they have marketed that means light plastic. In my opinion cheap synthetic stocks have no place on a store shelf until toys R us gets a license to sell firearms. I also was dually unimpressed with the tikka action that I had heard people raving about but that is a whole other matter.

Anyone else feel the same way? or have you all been brainwashed into believing that a synthetic stock is far superior for it's weight and "weather resistance"?

Amen brother!

Says he who was just showing off his new synthetic .260...:p

I don't care what anyone uses, but I'll say this. If there were NEW rifles available that had anything close to nice figured walnut, your argument would be valid. The junk that manufacturers pawn off as walnut these days is no better than a quality synthetic, and is no nicer to look at either.

Cooper and other high end rifles are the exception, as they are priced where quality wood stocks should be. If you expect Tikka, Savage, Rem or any other NEW rifle to have a nicely figured walnut stock for $1000, dream on. Most use Turkish walnut these days, because its cheap.

you would have a VERY different opinion if you ever had to use a rifle that wouldn't operate due to stock swelling- the BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT to the m14 was the change over to the fiberglas stock-not to mention some of the greatest firearms ever made live in synthetic stocks- the nylon 66, remington mohawk, the m14, 16, and a bunch of others

Goddang kids skatin' on the sidewalks again! Sidewalks are for walkin you little basterds! Back in my day....

I own a tikka t3 lite rifle and love it more then any wooden stock rifle. If you dont like them just dont use them

My safe queen M1 Garand .308 has a walnut stock since that's the way/feel/look/reputation I need to watch "Band of Brothers" and also to shoot at Vintage Rifle matches with the ORA at Base Borden.

All the rest of the rifles get used for training or competition and yup, they are all synthetic stocked! :D

To each their own.. Thank goodness for choice and a diverse selection! :)

p.

No kidding, most factory wood is crap these days. :p

I do agree with the poster, most of those synthetic stocks look C-H-E-E-P and they are cheap, cheap to manufacture, the manufacturers will tell you that they are more weather proof, scratch proof, Yada yada, the bottom line is that they are cheap to produce, more profit margin. I don't however begrudge anyone else that has or likes synthetic stocks, maybe they just haven't been around enough beautifully stocked, AAA grade walnut stocks.

As much as I appreciate a finely polished walnut stock, there are some major advantages to synthetic stocks. Firstly, they do not need maintenance, and do not shrink, expand or crack. Secondly, ounce for ounce, they can be stronger than wood stocks. Polymers have come a long way in the past 50 years, they are becoming more durable and lighter, literally the perfect material for a stock. Thirdly, you do not have to harvest or dry polymer stocks. They can be manufactured from a mold in a few minutes. This can greatly decrease the price of a rifle.

Again, it's not that I don't like wood stocks (I do), it's just that I think they both have their place in the firearms world.

Eh men to that!
Nice walnut stocks are great and all but in terms of upkeep........

Well if you like "guns" then like them all and let people like what they want....we need NUMBERS to keep what we all live going......I dislike alot of guns but could care less if others like them. Just shoot and have fun!

I've got wood stocks and synthetic stocks on over 70 long guns, Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Savage, Tikka, and on and on.
Yes, I also have a T3 lite Stainless synthetic in 9.3x62 and after several rough hunting seasons I think it is a fine well-made and wonderfully accurate rifle. In all seriousness I would not want to put any of my wood stocked rifles regardless of make through the places the Tikka has gone.
I love my wood stocked rifles, but when the trail gets rough I'm quite happy carrying that dependable little 7 lb. cannon...just my 2 cents worth...

With the same respect as the OP used in his post:

Shove it, Fudd.

Being far more respectful than the OP:

Well, to each their own then - fortunately you have the option of purchasing whatever YOU want, and we have the option of purchasing whatever WE want.

I ride a BMW motorcycle and I like synthetic stocks. All Harley dealerships should be closed down and the bikes on the road should be melted down to make more superior German technology.

Ruffle any feathers?

Yup I'm with you bro... but what really kills me is the Sako's & Tikka's with the flimsy little plastic safety doo-hickie!!! WTF is that all about??? I bet they saved about $.02 making that thing out of plastoy instead of steel. It was the plastic safety lever that made me buy a Remington 700 and I have no regrets... All metal & wood. That 2 cents savings cost them a sale.
