Powder identification

Hi. My father gave me a lot of powder from "Higginson powders" and
"Ammomart" but i'm unable to identify with any known powders on the
market. here are some numbers i can find on containers :

1- PP2 or PPZ written with pencil 1887

2 - HP-38 - 92187

3- NOBEL NRP 48

4- NOBEL 45-H

5 - NOBEL XR-4

6- NOBEL TRAP-1A

I have about 10 pounds minimum of each so i don't want to waiste these powders. For the trap-1A i even have 30 pounds unoppened! Where can i look for DATA. Containers are brand new and the powder in is smelling great (i opened one to test).

I contact Higginson powder and they reply that they doesn't remember these powders because it's 20 years old... Can't find any burning rate with these powder.

Hi Mick; As I remember the NRP 48 was a very close burner to H4831, and the 45 H was a H4895 clone. HP 38 is a fast burner used in pistol, and the Trap 1A is a trap 12 gauge powder, quite fast burning as I recollect. I do not know anything about XR4. Eagleye.

If you cannot find reliable loading data for these specific powders, do not even think of using them.

Powder's cheap; hands and eyes come a lot more expensive. A bargain's no bargain if you lose significant body parts.

There's a thread going on right now you should look at: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448373. Just make sure you've had you lunch first. The fact that Buddy apparently mixed up black powder with smokeless is immaterial. Think of how much difference even small increments can make with powders you are familiar with - just 10% can do a lot of damage. Now you're talking about stuff that might be something like something else...

Maybe somebody in the collecting world would be interested.
 
As indicated, Nobel 45-H is an OEM H4895 so is a near match to H4895 - a great propellant for the .308 Win. I have Higginson data on this for a number of calibers. PM me if you have a particular rifle caliber in mind.
 
One of the more knowledgeable members with respect to powders and loading is Ganderite. You might send him a pm.

Agreed if that where the case.

Sounds like the OP is looking at 70- 100lbs of powder. I know I would be making an effort to find some data! Thats $3000 worth these days.

From what he is saying much of it is still new still sealed and and in its original labeled cans. I've used powder that was over 25 years old before with excellent results.

Some of the nay-sayers here should read the original post a bit more closely and maybe step out of the bomb-disposal suit that they spend their lives in.

I still have about 1.5 lbs of it left. It worked awesome in the wife's 270 Win with 130's.

I found it to be a bit faster than H4831, but regardless use H4831 data, and work up like it is recommended in any manual.

If the OP has proper loading data, there's little reason not to use it. Properly stored, modern propellant will last a long time without serious degradation.

The kicker is that 'proper loading data'. I'll stand by my 'bomb-suit' comment - trying to guess or extrapolate from another propellant's data is dangerous, and I don't care if it's 10¢ a cwt.

Hope he get's some solid data.
 
I am not familiar with any of those powders.

I have some jugs of power in the bunker that I have forgotten what they are. The first step is exactly what he did - ask here. I bet most of it gets identified and he can carry on.

As for he shotgun powders, you could start loading it as a shotgun or pistol powder assumig it was 700 x, and then working up. So long as you are not trying to get max peformance out of a gun, you should soon find a load that gets good plinker performance.
 
Hi Mick, HP 38 is one of my favorite and i am ready to buy 2 pounds if you are a seller.
I will pass to see all your stock by tomorrow.
