The NEW KING is taking off!

Actually, what I am saying is: Ruger has put more .375 caliber rifles into the hands of hunters in 2-3 years, than H&H has done in almost a century.

I know precisely what you are stating, but how does that fact make the Ruger a better cartridge ? Obviously you must have some numbers to back up this statement....or is it just speculation ?
I'm inclined to believe that original purchase price of a Holland & Holland rifle had a lot to do with sales numbers.
The Winchester Mod. 70 was the first really affordable 375 H&H was it not ?
And now, like the Winchester, the Ruger Alaskan in 375 is probably somewhat more affordable than some of the other rifles in different 375 chamberings.
Don't get me wrong here, not trying to pick a fight, I have over half a dozen fine, good working Ruger rifles and more than a dozen of their handguns, all excellent products.... :)

Gatehouse, I am going to follow your wordplay and add a bit. Holland and Holland never set out to accomplish what Ruger did but onthe other side of the coin one H&H double is worth fifteen Rugers.

I believe a big part of the reason for the .375 Ruger's success is that the Ruger Alaskan fits a niche market that the H&H style of rifles do not. I don't know how the African version of the Ruger is selling, but the African version offers nothing that is not available from a host of other builders who make full length .375s with long barrels, blued finish, and wood stocks. To the African hunter, a short action rifle might not be much of a selling feature, but the Alaskan model is special, and that grabs people's imagination, and sells rifles.

All that fact means is that the NEW KING was able to achieve in a couple of years, what Holland & Holland was never able to accomplish.
:)

Sell affordable rifles to the masses?

Wonder how many 375H&H doubles would have sold for the same money as a Ruger Alaskan?

Oh wait, PRICE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE NEW KING!

I do believe it was Val Kilmer (playing Doc Haliday) in the movie Tombstone, who slurred in a drunken haze to the lone man standing in front of him: "I gots two barrels. One for the each of ya". Love that line.

Sorry, I beg to differ as I think the Holland & Holland 375 was and still is a very enviable accomplishment regardless of how many pieces Holland sold.

Having had the opportunity to compare both 375s side by side, I really couldn't see anything about the Ruger to get excited about, although I'll admit to probably being biased having owned and used the H&H for somewhere around 40 yrs.
For my own personal use I much prefer the 338 RCM over the 375 Ruger as I think it is more controllable and user-friendly especially as arthritis and old age set in..... but thats just me right ? :)

Ahhhh Gate, the 375 I bought is in a Winchester XTR Super Express. It's a real one not the new kid on the block. But thanks anyways for talking me into buying it. And I think I'll keep my HVA in 9.3x57 too. Like you say it is neat.

Comparing rifle makers Sturm,Ruger & Co. to Holland & Holland is like comparing a VW Beetle to a Ferrari.

Let's compare sales of total rifles sold in the calibers 375 Ruger vs. 375 H&H.

A few years from now the 375 Ruger will be where the WSSM's went........

It definately looks like an interesting cartridge and in addition, Ruger has made reliable products for years now. For me, the bigger question is, will it last or fall by the wayside? Out of ten new calibers or cartridges that just make the commercial scene, how many actually make it to a real level of public and economic acceptance? Having said that, the 375 H&H is there and many others like the 375 Ruger are, in my opinion, merely contenders at best.

:redface:Now, having said that, if there's anyone around with more than a fair share of some of the odd ball 'stuff', I'd like to know who;). For example;
  • 219 Donaldson Wasp
  • 7x57R
  • 7x61 S&H
  • 308 Norma Magnum
  • 348 WCF
  • 358 Norma Magnum
What can I say, except, perhaps I should get one;):p.

    17 Rem.
    219 Zipper Imp.
    220 Swift

    300 H&H
    338 Lapua AI
    404 Jeffery
    50 BMG
    to name a few...
and perhaps in the near future a 470 wildcat on the 375 Ruger case . :D

Yeah, and how many people are using these H&H doubles?

Nothing wrong with selling good quality, affordable products. How many Holland and Hollands do you own?

Sorry, I beg to differ as I think the Holland & Holland 375 was and still is a very enviable accomplishment regardless of how many pieces Holland sold.

It was a great accomplishment. It was the king of the .375's for almost a century- until the NEW KINGr came along.

Ahhhh Gate, the 375 I bought is in a Winchester XTR Super Express. It's a real one not the new kid on the block. But thanks anyways for talking me into buying it. .

I am sure you will enjoy your rifle. Is that a PF or CRF?

If you think sales volumes are high now, just wait till they put a camo paintjob, more plastic, and a "patented ballistic peepsight" on the Ruger 375.

Guns, to many a man, are like purses and shoes to a lady.

Comparing rifle makers Sturm,Ruger & Co. to Holland & Holland is like comparing a VW Beetle to a Ferrari.

How many Ferraris and H&H made rifles do you own?I've never owned a Ferrari, and doubt I will...

yes, lets compare, but to be fair, lets compare only the years that the NEW KING was available. I think you will find the NEW KING has far surpassed the H&H in new rifle sales.

A few years from now the 375 Ruger will be where the WSSM's went........

I doubt it. I think it will be more like the 300WSM. Everyone predicted it's death, too. I recall man on CGN saying "300WSM? Better stock up on brass, since you won't be able to get ammo for it in 5 years" Now it's almost a decade later and you can buy 300WSM ammo in Canadian TIre:p

Gatehouse has a H&H built 20 guage. How many guys on here actually HAVE a H&H built firearm? I got to hunt grouse with it 2 yrs ago. Nice piece of work!

Quality English doubles, beauties to behold and a pleasure to shoot:D.

When compared to some North American examples.

However, both are enjoyed and neither are for sale:).
