So I got to looking at mine yesterday (my 858) and thought to myself; "you know... I bet a good gun-pimper-outer company like Rauch or NEA or Neit could make a new gas block for this thing."

What I was thinking, and this might have to be specifically an NEA thing, is if one made a gas block with a small rail on it that would allow you to toss on a folding front sight and have it exactly level with the rail plane of the NEA railed upper and railed stock adapter.

A second option for those not interested in going with the NEA thing would be a new gas block ( hey I bet you could even do an adjustable gas dial if you wanted and someone would want it) with just a fixed sight on it that would utilize the default rear iron sight. This could be similar in design to some of those in pics floating around the forum that have recieved alot of interest. A good item for anyone going with an after-market short barrel or having their barrel shortened, not to mention the money to be made re-coating it all.

Any thoughts?
 
NEA has a clamp-on, railed base coming out that, as Charles puts it, "spoons" the gas block. It's on the same plane as the upper handguard and the rear stock adaptor. Perfect for running AR BUIS front and rear.
 
I dont mind sharing this product with you guys as its on the machines already and will not turn into a vapor wear product. What you are looking at is our self aligning railed barrel clamp. the rail is inline with NEA's hand guard and railed stock adapter. this allows you to mount buis and a full size red dot to get a co witness.

Realistically this will be available to the little people :p mid april.

A new gas block is easy to do. No problem at all with a mill and lathe. The issue, however, is that it will not be chrome lined and may be susceptible to rust. I could make one-offs, but not do series production with manual machines - at least not for anything anyone would be willing to pay!

An alternative would be to make from stainless, but then you'd have to find someone to coat it for you.
 
I would pay well for a gas block that duplicates the look of an AKM and allows the use of AK furniture. Very well, in fact.

That's actually a really good idea. I bet there would be a lot of people that would be interested in a dummy gas block. You'd likely have to have gas go similar to the normal routing, just have a dummy extension out the front and attaching around the barrel farther out.
 
I don't think it would have to go out further, I think the VZ furniture is in fact longer than the AK furniture. The block could stay where it is, but you would have to fashion new retaining plates for the shorter AK furniture to sit closer to the gun. This would give you the longer exposed upper gas tube out front a la AK series. Wouldn't be 100% obviously but just being able to use AK furniture on the gun would be a tremendous benefit IMO. How many surplus AK wood kits and aftermarket handguards are floating around out there? Hint: LOTS. Even if wood needed minor fitting I still think the look would be worthwhile, especially to those of us that have always desired an AK (hence my board name of course) and can't have one.

Other projects I would pay good cash for are a replacement top cover that replicates an AKM receiver cover with the sloped rear (would probably require the carrier to be reprofiled), receiver milled to accept an AK underfolder in the same fashion as an AKMS, or a Krinkov stock that folds to the left. Not sure how doable the first two are, but frankly I'm surprised no one's done the third. If anyone's been wanting to try and is just waiting for a customer, PM me. :D
 
Look at an Ak.. there's more you'd have to change than just the front block & band. Not quite as easy to do.

Making a repro AK gas block is easy enough, but you can't just slap on AK hardware because of it. I don't know how much of a market there is in purely cosmetic upgrades.

Dude! Kevin M. is selling off guns to pay for his AK-style furniture-making business. Just about everything sold for guns like this is just a cosmetic upgrade (I find it hard to believe people need Magpuls on their VZ-58 to shoot effectively :p). I'd say there is a LARGE market for purely cosmetic upgrades. If there wasn't, we'd all be shooting stock guns.

Seriously, someone please manufacture an AK-like gas block with modded AKM furniture on it. I will buy. NOW! ;)

Tell you what.. if you want to make the investment on the tooling, setup and supplies I'll kick a hundred out for you to do whatever you want with. You'll make some money if you can find another 99 people that think the same as you.. Might be a tough sell, but you're sold on it. I'll figure it out, but I'm not going to sell you only one.. ;)
