I would in a minute.
Those long 117gn 25-35 bullets have excellent penetration & make good deer rounds, much better than .22hp which of course is a famous Tiger killer

It uses .228" bullets. Using a .223" or .224" bullet explains the key holing.
Hornady makes a .227" 70 grain SP that will do nicely. RCBS, Redding and Hornady make dies. You'll most likely have order 'em though. Uses an RCBS #2 shell holder. Same as the .30-30.

Yessir, I watched my son kill his first three blacktail deer, with one shot each, using his 25-35 Model 94. He was using the Hornady 117 gr RN bullet ahead of 25 gr of 3031.

It works on moose, too.

On the topic of the 99 Savage in 22 HP, here's a picture of a Lady from some years back that used that combination hunting Grizzly in the B.C. central interior. Mrs. Betty Wendle of Barkerville.

She and her husband Joe were still living in Barkerville when we lived there, for five months, when we first moved to B.C. in '55. I remember seeing a number of Grizzly hides mounted in the stairwell of their home.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread, or advocate that caliber for that size game. More a history note than anything, concerning the 22 HP.

Not to jack the thread, but I would be supremely interested if anyone could give me info on a 30-30 conversion for this rifle.

The problem with the Hornady 70gr SP bullet for the 22HP is they made it too long and it is unstable from Ken Waters.........................Harold

Speer used to make a .228 70gr bullet. I squirreled a few boxes away somwe time ago. Some may still turn up at shows.

There is the odd one that will shoot heavy .224s but for the most part it's .228 or nothing.

Question for original poster: what bullets are you shooting that's keyholing?

We had a box of 22HP my Father in law was not sure when he bought them

Thanks for all the input. I have contacted a very good GS and have decided to pull the firing pin and display this little bit of history.
I do agree I wish Savage would come back to the model 99 its one fine looking gun
