buck shot

I'm not personally saying that buckshot is bad. I've seen what it'll do to a deer when shot in the wrong place though. As people have already stated in this thread, when used in the right conditions and by someone who knows what they're doing with it, it can be lethal. We used to use 00 and 000 buckshot but after seeing the damage that it can do when used improperly and since none of us are 100% crack shots, we stuck with slugs after that.

And you wound deer less when you hit them poorly with slugs?

for ontarians....

no person shall use a shotgun smaller than 20 gauge when loaded with shot or any shotgun loaded with shot smaller than SG or No. 1 buck.

For hunting. I should have clarified, the deer I killed with #4 were hit by cars with broken legs....

Steam engines worked well too, yet we use diesel-electric!

Yeah OK buddy!

Thats a sound argument.

Put that in a letter to the ministry maybe it will change their minds and they'll amend the regs.

Better yet write the Red Star maybe they'll put it in a column, McGuinty will read it "Steam engines worked well too, yet we use diesel-electric!" McGuinty will summon his minister and order the ministry to amend the regs.

or

you could contact CityPulse 24 ask to appear on Mike LeDrew and voice your well thought out position on the matter "Steam engines worked well too, yet we use diesel-electric!" and the public outcry that ensues will force the Government to amend those God awful regs.

"Steam engines worked well too, yet we use diesel-electric!" sure convinced me (no argument to be found there)

Was that "cdngunner" camped out at Queens Park last summer holding a poster "Steam engines worked well too, yet we use diesel-electric!

If 00 buck fails to exit a deer shot inside of 12 yards, how well does the #1 and #4 penetrate? Buckshot works at close range, but slugs work better IMO.

A 357 or 44 mag hollowpoint won't exit at 12 yards either, but is more than enough to kill. Energy and shock transfer are all that matter. Penetration and through shots don't kill. I've shot upwards of 15 deer with Winchester Supreme Partition Gold slugs. All shots were through and through and every one of those deer ran between 3 and 150 yards. Every one was hit through heart and/or lungs. Each of the deer I've taken with buckshot went down inside of 2 steps if not cartwheeled end over end.

X2. I use slugs now for stand hunting and shots out to 100 yards. Most of my deers hit withslugs have run around 50 yards except one that was shot in the head.

However when driving deer and using buckshot it was definitely effective. Most shots were 40 yards or less and they dropped in their tracks. This was using Premium buckshot and full chokes.

723723 I question your sense of humor, IMHO cdngunner's sarcasm is rather humorous but that may be because I agree with the sentiment there are not enough skilled hunters to be using buckshot, because it is true that you need to get within bow range, AND place a good shot to be effective with buckshot. Seeing as so many have mentioned the deer "running through the bush" when they take their shots I am sure more than a few may have thought they missed but managed to hit them with at least a few pellets, while the deer kept going.
