Thinking of Selling a 1950 Russian??

Firing pin is'nt the free floating type that is known for slam fires. It is spring loaded. Maybe there is a proper term for it, but I call it a spring loaded firing pin. I know what the stores are selling the SKS for, I just did'nt know if the square gas block models from 1949 & 1950 were more rare.

The SKS looks kind of like crap stock. I think they should be worth more when someone takes the time and money to do a nice job in refinishing the stock.

No, not really. You've taken a collectible rifle, and turned it into a shooter. And one with a non chrome lined barrel at that. Which actually makes it worth less than a normal refurbed Russian SKS. Before refinishing the stock you could have gotten a premium, not now.

Agreed. I just passed on a $225 1950 at Lebaron in Ottawa earlier today. The metal was sound, but it was in a poorly fitted laminate stock where the action slid fore and aft in the inletting by 1/4" or so. The metal actually looked untouched by the refurb, just a stock swap... BUT... with a 1950 or 1949, you want original. If it's a refurb it's a shooter and in a shooter you want a tight stock and a chromed bore. Settled on a nice 1952 refurb instead ;)

SKS is a SKS right. I have a pellet gun thats worth more than the one I own. I don't think these things are ever going to be collectors, not compared to some other rifles. They made a gazillion of these things.

I think to a non SKS lover, a nicely refinished SKS would fetch a lot more than a old beat up, piece of crap looking one. I know your point that a old unfinished rifle is worth more untouched, but these are SKS's. These things will never be classified as a real collectable.

I am not trying to insult anyone, obviously I own a SKS also. I plan on buying another one also down the road, because they are fun, cheap guns. Whens the last time you saw a SKS sell for Grand = Never, not even in the states were they are hard to come by. These things will never be "real" collectors, so anyone who wants to re-finish a stock go ahead. Whats the most you will decrease the value by, $50 bucks. You will probably make money, by selling it to someone who is just looking for a Deer rifle.

Maybe most people who are members of CGN would know a little bit about a SKS, but the average hunter out there is going to think that there old, beat up Winchester 30-30 lever action rifle is worth more money than a SKS.

Again, I am not trying to insult any SKS lovers out there, because I am a SKS lover also, I am just realistic.

Ahhhh..............you might want to check again about the US SKS prices. There are ones that sell for $1500 to 2000 let alone one grand. Unrefurbed Russians are going for over $500,with Norincos going for $300 plus.

Shooter Russkie SKSs are worth around 200 - 250 bucks plus shipping.

Sorry but like previous posters, by refinishing the stock and shooting it, you have turned your possibly collectible 1950 into a shooter. Just keeping it real.

Kind of strange to ask for opinions then argue when every single person tells you the same thing. You bubba'd a collector. Jimmy-Joe down at the local gunmart isn't going to know the difference (or care) about it being a 1950 Russian so he would not pay more then the 169.99$ Brand New Norc in the on special rack at the Gunmart, A collector who knows what is is would not pay much since you bb'd it so...what else do you want to hear?

I could see origional SKS seeker a much higher price, I was talking refurbs. Once there a refurb there always a refurb. My 1950 russian refurb was'nt a collector to begin with. It was a refurb. I can see a origional, losing major value once its been refinished, but not really a refurb. You can only make a SKS look so nice, kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.LOL

Whatever, we are gettin off topic ( partially my fault) . I figured my SKS was worth $250-$300, and that sounds about right. I posted my SKS on EE and I have a couple interested trade opportunities for my refinished refurb as we speak, so I better sound off on this thread now and tend to business.
Sorry to offend anyone, I was'nt really sure on the price of a origional SKS in the States so My bad. I am a SKS lover, and I plan on getting another one very soon. I am actually looking for a Chrome Bore shooter so I can put a Tapco stock on it and make it a shooter.

There in lies the problem. Your SKS was collectable, even though it was a refurb. 1950 Tulas with the square gas block are rare, refurbed or not. Yes,most refurbs are just shooters. But some are worth more, and your's was one of the more valuable ones I'm afraid.

I could not agree with you more. I have stated most of your opinions before and all it did was turn the thread into a pissing match on who was right and who was wrong. As a person who attends a lot of US gun shows I can tell you that the Americans are asking big dollars for different grades of SKS's but they are not getting the prices they are asking....not even close.

My apologies if I sounded like I was argueing. I was debating some comments that I did'nt agree with, but I won't comment back no more on the subject, I have quite interesting trades right now that Im thinking over so the first post I put up here is'nt reall relevent to me any longer.
